A little light humor for the weird times we find ourselves in...

Going by the well informed information in the video I'm considering moving to Greenland
Coronavirus is an anagram of Carnivorous (strange but true)
We have 7 cases of the virus, not bad considering we have a population of 181,000 people in Worcester Ma.
Carl2
I got some surprising results when looking at the virus posts on the internet, gun sales are way up about 75 % for some reason, the state is having problems getting provisions to deal with the virus because of the federal government that gets these supplies. Police procedures have been changed for people being arrested, once they are arrested and identified it seems they are let go to be given a trial at a later period. A large number of people in prison are being let go.
Carl2
Thinking about the whole Chinese virus one of the first things that comes to mind is people have over populated. Even in America we now have wild animals living in our back yard such as wolfs and bears, we have already taken away forest land and put in more housing for people. China has a much larger population and had a one child per family limitation that was increased to two children. Maybe I'm giving
the virus to much credit by saying the virus has chosen the perfect host, people a social animal that makes frequent contact with other people.

It's eerie and quiet out here. Fire alarm safety makes me a key worker, apparently. Having a difference of opinion about what work is essential with my MD.
Am currently working on a go slow and treating everywhere as contaminated. Using loads of hand sanitiser everywhere.
I thought Brexit was bad for being scary and boring at the same time but this is awful. In a permanent state of anxiety ATM.
Just need somewhere to put my thoughts where work can't see.
Keep safe and be lucky, everyone.
Snowy, I don't think I could give you any advice that you don't already know, just keep doing what you are doing, keep your distance from people, don't touch your face and keep them hands clean.
I genuinely feel for you my old buddy.
It seems the US goverment has been been working on this for ages.
It's rather funny but I ran across the fact that computer modeling has been in use for years in the US.
"From at least 2005 to 2017, an office inside DHS, in tandem with analysts and supercomputers at several national laboratories, produced detailed analyses of what would happen to everything from transportation systems to hospitals if a pandemic hit the United States, But the work abruptly stopped in 2017 amid a bureaucratic dispute over its value, two of the former officials said, leaving the department flat-footed as it seeks to stay ahead of the impacts the COVID-19 outbreak is having on vast swathes of the U.S. economy. Officials at other agencies have requested some of the reports from the pandemic modeling unit at DHS in recent days, only to find the information they needed scattered or hard to find quickly."
"in 2014 put under OCIA, which has listed analyzing "pandemic influenza" as a top priority." "one report that NISAC worked on for a table-top exercise looked at how to combat a hypothetical epidemic in Southeast Asia, what travel restrictions to put in place, and how to design social distancing to stop the epidemic inside the United States." "The modeling unit's work also addressed real-life impacts to infrastructure due to smaller-scale outbreaks, including the H5N1 bird flu in 2007, H1N1 in 2009, Ebola in 2014 and the Zika virus in early 2016." All figured out and nothing to worry about.
Carl2
It sounds like Trump knows what he's doing, the USA should be safe in his hands.
Meanwhile over here we are all being told to stay indoors.

I was just reading there were 3 waves of the virus spreading in China and it is likely to happen in the US.
Warmer weather in the summer will low down the spread but it will increase as the weather gets cooler.
In the meantime the the US wants people to return to work to get the economy back in shape.
Carl2
Feeling more positive today. I'm not sure and haven't been tested but I think I've already had it.
Very mild symptoms and none they are showing on websites or I would have self isolated.
I had a headache on Tuesday, lasted about 6-8 hours. Annoying but not severe. I slept for 2 hours in the evening. A slight ache to the lower lungs. No breathing problems/sneezing/cough. This comes and goes but had it for about 7 days.
Still using hand sanitiser like it's going out of fashion and keeping 2 meter (6 feet) distance.
You and me both Snowy, I've had the same symptoms on and off for over a week, don't know for sure if it is the big one but would be good if it was. Still doing my bit here.
I just watched a video where a woman who was in the hospital received a bill for $34,000 dollars and since her husband changed jobs there was no insurance.

That sounds pretty awful.
I just read a " teen was turned away for lack of insurance and may have died of Covid 19 issues "

Your healthcare system sucks. You really need a social catch net. There's no perfect system but you could do so much better. (the you is the USA, not you personally ???)
https://youtu.be/k6nLfCbAzgo
A good video on explaining how to flatten the curve can help us all. Going to be paying for it for years though.
I have to admit that the US health system has been way behind the rest of the worlds, I've heard this for many years. There was a bit of hope when Trump announced a person recovered after receiving some medication but I've heard nothing about this since.
Very nice video that you put in, i'm not sure but I think the government predictions also include hospital beds needed, testing supplies needed, masks and other equipment and of course money needed. There is also the high risk people like doctors and nurses, as well as police and firefighters.
Carl2
President Trump has extended the social distancing from April 12 to April 30 th. He had a friend that was in a coma because of the virus and talked about body bags being loaded into large trucks in a New York neighborhood where he grew up.

I came across this video by John Oliver about the US virus response, I'll have to let the viewers decide how they feel about it.

I think It's easy to criticise any countries handling of Covid 19, they all have their own methods and "experts" there is no magic wand, everyone is learning as they go.
1st death in a care home in Brighton and Hove yesterday. I knew him too, was at a care home my missus works at until he moved. Like the Stranglers, heard him listening to Ratus. RIP Giuseppe/Joseph.
The next 2 weeks are going to be scary.
1,000 police officers in New York died ( very large city on the eastern coast, high death rate) . Even doctors are having problems following rules that keep changing over time like when to wear a mask and can be dismissed. It seems the government is trying to reduce traveling and cars with out of state a plates are not allowed to go into neighboring states.
Carl2
Things are going to get worse before they get better.
I've been asked to make some pretty tough decisions regarding my M&D in the care home, not going into details but wasn't easy. Their care home is clear of Covid 19 at the moment.
Getting a bit tired of the virus thing that is starting to get to a peak level, at the same time the government is trying to keep the economy a float using a stimulus package that is still not ready to handle the volume. So we have a system set up to penalize people and business for not paying taxes, loans ect and now we have to find a way to bypass that system.
I've also heard that we will have another peak in the virus during the fall.
Carl2
Our Prime Minister has been taken into ICU this evening. Gonna be out of action for a few weeks, assuming he pulls through.
I visited a relative and she wouldn't let me in but explained that she wasn't feeling good and her sister was in the hospital being tested for the virus and the results would be in in a few days time. This is the the most direct contact I've had with the virus. I should pick up some type of mask which is recommended.
I've learned the manufacturer of some drug used for the virus paid 1,000,000 for an audience with Trump and now Trump is recommending this drug.
Carl2
Such visits in my state can result in a fine, imprisonment or Both!
We have a strict "Stay at home" directive! Only trips to doctors, pharmacies or grocery stores are allowed (and prudent).
We told our kids and grandchild Not to come by or visit as we would not let them in. My wife has a weakened immune system and we are not about to risk catching anything from anyone.
Besides, I don't have an extra $5,000 lying around to pay the fine!
???
£30 fine here the last I heard.
I was able to go into town to the doctors to hand in my prescription order, there were very few people about. Most people are taking the advice and staying at home.
Much less traffic on the roads than there would usually be, just about every one is wearing some type of mask.

For me it's Resident Evil :o
A large group of economists say the US is in a recession, I spent twice as much for a loaf of bread because the store brand wasn't on the shelf. Food prices keep increasing, for what ever reason the aisles are now one one way, I'd have to say the shelves are better stocked though.
Carl2
Here's a link to the world figures. Grim reading. Note that cases are only from hospitals, so most mild cases (upto 80%) are not reported. Not all deaths are reported, I know UK only reports hospital deaths not nursing homes, I believe others do similar. China is either under reporting or knows something they're not telling.

As far as I know that is how the virus was spread to the US.

I had heard the virus was related to bats and I looked for bats and covid-19 on you tube, it seems they have groups of people capturing bats to look at viruses they carry and collect data about the viruses and keep track of them. Quite a few viruses can be carried by them. I looked further into this and found a video on Tracking Down the Origin of the Wuhan Coronavirus or the Covid-19 virus. Pretty long film but very interesting. I never knew that China was run by the communist .

The United States has the world's highest death toll. UK now has world's third-highest COVID-19 death toll. They have shut down a few stores in Worcester because people working in the store had the virus.
The state has said it will respond slowly lifting bans to avoid having the virus start another upswing.
Two Massachusetts hospitals, Massachusetts General Hospital and UMass Memorial, helped put the experimental drug Remdesivir to the test against COVID-19 and it seems to show promise.
Carl2
Just an FYI, Cuba, Laos, North Korea, China and Vietnam are the current Communist countries in the world. Several others have been under communist rule at different points in time but these are the current 5.
Art, Thanks for putting that in, haven't keep up on the on Communist countries for ages. Looks like there are a lot of countries that would like to sue China including the US. I hope they will be able to get a vaccine for the virus.

I came across another video "Chinese lab conducted extensive research on deadly bat viruses, but there is no evidence of accidental release"
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/chinese-lab-conducted-extensive-research-on-deadly-bat-viruses-but-there-is-no-evidence-of-accidental-release/ar-BB13rxpf?ocid=msedgdhp
What is real and what is not real?
Carl2
There seems a lot of press to say this virus was made in a lab. At the moment I feel this is politically driven and not "fact".
This virus is named either SARS-CoV-2 or 2019-nCoV. The names come from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome - Corona Virus 2 or 2019 novel Corona Virus. The disease it causes is CoViD-19 which comes from Corona Virus Disease 2019.
Found this report from 10-12 March. (https://fullfact.org/health/new-coronavirus-not-genetically-engineered/)
QuoteThe study did find that SARS-CoV-2—referred to by its former name 2019-nCoV in the report—has a similar genome sequence to other coronaviruses. However, it also has a noticeable difference in the form of a "peculiar furin-like cleavage site" which has not been seen in other coronaviruses.
Furin is a protein found in humans and animals which can be exploited by viruses like coronavirus, HIV and Ebola to help them spread by activating the proteins which hold the virus, and are contained in "cleavage sites".
The study said the "furin-like cleavage site" in SARS-CoV-2 "may provide a gain-of-function to the 2019-nCov for efficient spreading in the human population" compared to other coronaviruses.
In simple terms, this means that the presence of this site in the virus could be the reason why it is infecting so many people. However, the study makes absolutely no suggestion that the virus has been "genetically engineered" to cause this.
I don't go for conspiracy theories but China does seem somewhat complicit in allowing international flights (https://english.alarabiya.net/en/features/2020/04/09/Coronavirus-Critics-ask-why-China-allowed-flights-out-of-Hubei-during-outbreak) to spread the virus while locking down internal flights.
I still feel Trump is making outbursts to further his political aims.
But this could be the beginning of germ war 3
Besides the video there is also written statements that people from the US and other countries visited the labs, also Biogen a US company was in China and brought back the virus to the US. Quite a few companies in different countries do research in Biowarfare since it costs less than making and moving bombs around. Guess I'll just say here we are creating viruses to destroy the enemy when even back in the days of Christ we wanted Peace.

Sad news about Dave Greenfield :(
I can't remember all the hours spent listening to The Stranglers but it's a lot.
RIP Dave.
He has a pretty nice voice, easy to listen to.
Really wanted to put in the cost of going to a hospital and get treatment for the virus would be $15,000 dollars, this is an average cost a at a average hospital. $32 dollars to get an appointment with the average doctor if you believe you have the virus and would like to see a doctor. I'd be wiped out if I received a bill that size, Probably have to just stay at home and see if I lived or died. At my age I am probably doing that anyways.
Carl2
FYI, Dave Greenfield is the keyboard (harpsichord) player who does backing vocals in Golden Brown. He comes from Brighton area (Portslade) where Data and myself live. I've seen the Stranglers 5 times, my most watched band.
Your healthcare sucks. Ours has its problems and is a 2 tier system (free at point of need & private healthcare) but when the shit hits the fan like a global pandemic, it won't leave you bankrupt.
We do all pay for it with our taxes.
I think Carl would be the first to admit the American health service is less than satisfactory, he has said it before.
I remember talking to an American on the Web a few years back and he said he wasn't prepared to pay tax that funded a free healthcare system for the whole country, I think many Americans have the same opinion. Of course it's completely alien to us and most of the other countries in the world, free healthcare is in our DNA.
If you get ill the last thing you need is money worries on top of it.
I know it is said the US is way behind the rest of the world as far as health care. I know they were trying to over haul the health care system but the virus came along and nothing has been said about it. If health care is supported by taxes the people are actually paying for it so we don't get free health care.
Since I'm always looking at Covid-19 info I came across the US sewerage system started checking the sewerage for Covid-19 and found there was Covid-19. In the past they have checked for opium in the system and found that in the sewerage.
Reopening businesses may start 5-18, but there are stores that have been shutdowns because large numbers of people that worked in them have the virus. Grocery stores also have a large number of people with the virus, firemen and police again have people with the virus. People working in meat packing plants also have a high infection rate and some refuse to go back to work. It seems like a good time to start a company making robots that Japan has done.
Carl2
Well so far I learned that the sewerage system has taken samples of the sewerage and found the virus is in the sewerage, I wonder if someday we can drink some water and get the virus but I'm not sure how the sewerage department works. Over all it seems like we have found Pandora's box. I never would have thought that China would have people in China going to bat caves, capturing bats taking blood tests and collecting them and analyzing there waste and selling the bats for food. So bats live in caves and you can find 500 per cubic feet, the viruses they contain is in the hundreds and these results are recorded so we can combat viruses like we now have since biological warfare has long been banned.
Carl2
I wouldn't like to say for sure where the virus came from or how it got out to the human population, there seems to be a lot of politics involved and I don't trust politics.
What we have to do as individuals is learn to deal with it in our every days lives, balance the risk with our freedom, do our best to prevent getting infected while living as normal a life as possible.
Well that's how I see it.
Well pretty big mess we have now, strange not understood virus infecting and killing so many people.
Unemployed people that need money to live but also don't want to go out and get the virus. Democrats want to do it this way while Republicans want to do it that way. Well the big thins is the vaccine, we have to break all the rules we have set up to get it set up and tested in record time, that should make billions for someone.
Carl2
I decided to do a little research on Shi Zhengli a renowned virologist, best known for her work with bat coronaviruses at her lab at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). She discovered the natural bat reservoir for the Sars pathogen that spread in southern China from 2002 to 2003. A few surprising things appeared there are reports that she disappeared but there is also a statement from her that she is okay. There is also a statement where she tries to disinfect something that make me think of Trumps remark of using a
disinfectant to get rid of the virus. Shi has been under heavy scrutiny amid concerns that the virus had originated from the Wuhan lab although she denies this. There is also information she brought to a US embassy in France.
There is tons of misinformation out there. China, a few weeks ago, said it came from the USA. I have heard that it has been genetically engineered with HIV. Don't believe what you read, just take it on board as possible. I feel most evidence or conspiracy reports make little odds to how I live or what I do.
I have seen a survey that tested for a protein of the virus at a health clinic. 100% of swabs from the pharmacy floor had it, 85% of phones etc...
I assume the sewer test is the same. This does NOT mean the virus is present and viable. It means it has been there.
The virus dies after 24 hours on most surfaces. I have heard up to 72 hours on aluminium. The protein lasts much longer.
Still looking forward to the day I don't have to queue (line) to get in a shop.
A large number of countries are unhappy how the virus was handled, you have the communist party in China with their on set of procedures and standards, The WHO a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health. Trump feels the WHO helped cover up the virus while WHO says they reported the info China gave them. But China quickly went about buying medical supplies it knew it would be needing for a wide spread virus and the US bought some of these supplies from China.
All we can do is see how it plays out.
Carl2
"The U.S. Department of Commerce on Saturday expanded its so-called entities list, which restricts access to American technology and other items, to include 24 Chinese companies and universities it said had ties to the military and another 9 entities it accused of human rights violations in Xinjiang. Some of the organizations affected issued statements opposing the move, while analysts warned of a further decoupling between the U.S. and China." At the same time China is seeing a second wave of the virus spreading again.
There is also a spread of the virus in Brazil and the US has a travel ban there. Meanwhile there is a lot of work being done in many countries to develop a vaccine.
Carl2
We are all going to have to get used to living with the virus for a long time and change the way we do things.
A lot of work is being done to find a vaccine for the virus, many international companies are working together or independently to find a vaccine. In the US and possibly other countries testing the vaccines has been put fast track by bypassing some safety measures and studying several vaccines to find good and the best ones. Also companies need to be able to make large amounts of the vaccine because it is needed world wide.
There is also work being done with antibodies where antibodies from a person that had the virus is collected and these can be given to a person that has the virus. The addition of these antibodies help the receiver to fight the virus.
Many of the countries in south America are having the virus and a large percentage of the countries don't have economic resources to stop the deaths.
Carl2
I still keep an eye on this site. Only official data and different countries do different things and then there's China that just give out BS.
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
At time of posting 358k deaths worldwide and graph is still straight up. Grim reading. 2k new cases off of 115k tests today for the UK. 412 deaths today with a total of 37k. Not good but looking hopeful.
our site
https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/
Well president Trump has once again thrown a bone into the mix, it is said he does this as a method to distract people. Twitter ran a fact check on Trumps twitter that upset him and plans to remove a policy that would not hold Twitter liable and would also apply to Facebook.
They would like to expand WHO's Powers, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison pushed for a revamp of the agency's mandate to give it powers to investigate potential pandemics similar to weapons inspectors.
As I had mentioned before the virus has a firm hold in the South American countries, in Mexico, it's not just the coronavirus that is claiming lives. The country's broken health system is killing people as well. Years of neglect had already hobbled Mexico's health care system, leaving it dangerously short of doctors, nurses and equipment to fight a virus that has overwhelmed far richer nations.
Now, the pandemic is making matters much worse, sickening more than 11,000 Mexican health workers — one of the highest rates in the world — and depleting the already thin ranks in hospitals. Some hospitals have lost half their staff to illness and absenteeism. Others are running low on basic equipment, like heart monitors.
Carl2
I'm a bit concerned about the USA right now, with all the riots going on that is going to help spread the virus for sure.
Protesters lighted cars on fire in New York, Seattle and Philadelphia. In Los Angeles, demonstrators kicked in the windshields of police cars, torched a police outpost in an outdoor shopping mall, and looted Nordstrom and Ray Ban stores. Police shot rubber bullets and swung their batons at demonstrators.
In Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz pleaded with residents to obey an 8 p.m. curfew. Mr. Walz said he was fully mobilizing the state's National Guard after a night of rioting and violence, leaving open the possibility of requesting federal troops; forces from other states had also been readied to deploy to Minnesota.
Really there are protests and curfews all over the US, hard to believe it has gone from bad to worse.
Not sure what to say but I can remember when I was young I was fascinated by bats and wanted to catch one. I'll bet the protestors don't wear masks.
Carl2
Trump spent about an hour in an underground bunker as hundreds of protesters gathered outside the executive mansion, some of them throwing rocks and tugging at police barricades over the week end.
A much milder form of protest than appeared across most of the US. I can't help but see a somewhat similar issue in China happening where there is a second wave of the virus and people are in lockdown and there is much unrest.
Carl2
I can only watch in disbelief at the situation in some countries.
Really bad situation I'd have to agree, besides the amount of people that die you also have economic conditions causing many problems. Curfews seem to be coming into effect but locking people inside may add to there frustration.
Carl2
Lately I've been trying to get away from this matter but came across " Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) tweeted Thursday it had spotted attempts by Iranian and Chinese state-back hacking groups to attack the Trump and Biden campaigns." A bad situation made worse.

I not long ago read something about the virus, it stated the nasal passage way is responsible for the virus getting into the body while the mouth is not responsible for letting the virus into the body. my feeling was why is the mask filtering air into mouth and nose, why not block of the nose so all air will enter the mouth. Sounds so simple but this approach is not used.
Carl2
I think that the book isn't written yet on all infection vectors. I think the sinus is the main infection route (can be from nose or eyes) but it then moves to the throat and lungs. It can then move to the blood and gut causing other symptoms.
Coughing and spit seem to be how we spread it, hence the mask over the mouth. Masks don't really stop you from getting it, they're more to stop you spreading it.
Found this level headed and interesting. Liked the Joestradamus bit too.

It looks like there are a good number of vaccines coming along fairly soon, by summer the worst of Covid could be over :fingers-crossed:
Can't help but think we were lucky the virus can even be vaccinated against.
Also feeling grateful to the many scientists and technicians from various countries for all their hard work :worship:
In other news the UK government are going to let up to 12 family members join up for Christmas, oh well you can't have everything, I was looking forward to a nice quite stress free few days
