Jell-O is a company that makes Gelatin (your "jelly"), but they also make pudding (but ~NOT~ bread pudding, or that odd stuff that includes over-boiled bits of otherwise unusable bits and bobs of something that's almost, but not entirely unlike, meat), as well, and that's what they "sacrificed".

Here, we have jelly (fruit preserves with no seeds, such as grape, apple or pear jelly), jam (fruit preserves with the seeds, such as strawberry, raspberry, or fig) and preserves, which is sort of a "catch-all" category, which can be just about anything, so long as it's a fruit or vegetable.

And what's wrong with pancakes? Well, other than the cholesterol, way too much fat and sugar, and being large enough to feed an entire Ethiopian village?

We have jellies here too like you describe, but it's probably a more countryside type thing - for example Crab Apple Jelly - my Mum used to make that a lot when we were kids - no pips or seeds...

I just like the different way we use the 'same' language. Be very careful when asking for suspenders over here. They are not braces.

The weirdest misunderstanding I've had in the USA was over water. In estuary accent English it becomes walter with a very soft 'lt' but in (I'm not sure where) USA it becomes waarter. Me asking 'where's the water' became a conversation far longer than I expected.
