Yes, Magician David Blaine has made news with his balloon-powered "flight". While its not a plane it is a lifting apparatus and it lifted David high enough that he had to enter commercial airspace.

I think he went to 24.900 ft above sea level before releasing. Quite an interesting and educational journey for him and his little daughter to witness and share.
