Many are the times where I've gone to see a movie after having read the book, only to be disappointed, or even outraged, by the results. Such was the case with the Harry Potter series of books, the movie Eregon, The Hitchhiker's Guide, and even Ender's Game. Plot compression, casting choices and "creative license" just tend to piss me off. This is why I pray nobody ever makes movie adaptations for any of Anne McCaffery's or David Eddings' works.
It can be annoying watching someone else's interpretation of a book. Reading a book is a private experience after all.
My first contact with HHGTTG was the British TV series. I really enjoyed it, I bought it again a while back. This is what introduced me to Adams and the rest of his books. I enjoyed reading the books as much as the TV series and then of course there were his other books.
Anyway, some times it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I see MTV is doing an adaption of Terry Brooks Shannara series, I dread to think how that will turn out
Ahh, the Shannara series. I had almost forgot about that one. Of all the characters I've come to know from that magical land, I most adored Par and Col, Walker Bo, and Wren. My favorite druid would have to be Alanon, though (back when he was actually alive, of course). :)
A good series that is still being written, considering the first book "The Sword of Shannara" was first published in 1977 2 years after I was born Terry Brooks has done a pretty good job keeping it fresh.
