Title: Graphene Battery - Bold Claims
Post by: Data on April 27, 2016, 18:20:52 PM
This got my attention.

QuoteAccording to CEO and President Martín Martínez, Graphenano is producing batteries with energy densities of 1,000 watt-hours per kilogram -- around five times that of current lithium-ion cells. A Tesla Model S equipped with these batteries would increase its range from 334 to 1,013 kilometers, he claimed.

The vid looks nice but my Spanish is no where near good enough to keep up.

I hope this is true as it is just what the industry needs. 10% here and there is good but 500% would be game changing.

QuoteThe real breakthrough, explained de la Fuente, could be in so-called "post-lithium-ion" chemistries -- such as using graphene in the cathodes of lithium-sulfur cells. However, this type of technology is at least five years away from commercialization, he said. Anything even more innovative would likely be more than a decade away.

So maybe more modest at first but a step in the right direction. Moving away from cobolt and onto sulphur is better for scalability.

QuoteIt is not impossible that Graphenano and Grabat could offer a groundbreaking product. But extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence -- and that evidence has not yet been produced.

More like it but definitely worth keeping an eye on.

You summed that up nicely there Snowy, well I think so.

The Spanish company's claims are bold but do give us hope. There needs to be a leap in battery technology, I think, hope it will happen sooner than later.

Yup, heading in the right direction.

Just a side thought:
If much larger capacity batteries do become available then the logic would point to longer charging times.  There might actually be a "sweet spot" in capacity, too small and it doesn't hold enough charge, too large and charging time is too long.

That's where HFC's come in  ;)

A lot of the excitement dies when it's years up the road.  It is nice to see chemistry being used for something besides pill with a long list of side effects.  I have some rechargable lithium batteries from a camera, I should look at.

I was wondering how long it would be until we heard more about graphene battery technology, it would seem that Samsung have been taking a serious look at the idea and have come some way to making it a reality.

Is it a perfect battery ? No but Samsung are claiming it can hold 45% more power and charge 5X faster than standard lithium ion batteries.

Sure looks interesting, lots of uses for it, I hope it works out okay.
