Those systems make mine look puny. I need to win the lottery so that i can upgrade. :P

It's OK Dave, CPU for say £320, mobo for £80, memory, well how much does one need.

8 core for the masses has arrived me thinks. Big shake up coming to the PC market.

Thank you AMD

Now for a bit of fun.

The Kaby Lake is out, now I'm waiting for the Coffee Lake that offers more improvements but the Cannon Lake has still more improvements and will be six cores.  Zen is out of the picture until they start selling it and they have a few years with the processor.

I still does not make sense for me to change much, especially CPU - would mean MB and RAM too. It's coming up to two years since I got my 6 core and it is still doing all I need. I would be interested to see how my rig compares to these new beasts though.

hilarious video, Data. thanks for that. :)

I just received a link to the Zen
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-ryzen-7-1700-1700x-1800x,33702.html
Pricing and pre orders are today.
Ryzen 7 1800X ($499),   there are 3 versions available, the least expensive is $329 and the clock rate goes down with price.
The AMD is already being sole at Newegg, it seems Intel is getting over $1,000 for 8 cores.

Yes they are indeed, AMD are saying and have proved with some benchmarks that their R7 1800X CPU is faster and half the price of the Intel equivalent.

Intel will have to drop their prices now, I can't see any other way for them.

When I started this thread I was hoping for a good result from AMD but now I think we have an excellent result.  ;D

Little note to Freddy, you might be able to pick up an Intel 8 core soon for less bucks.

World record benchmark, very nice  :D

5.2 GHz, ok it was extreme cooling but it shows there is plenty of potential in the chip.

We know about the R7 chips then but AMD will also be releasing their R5 and R3 CPU's too, here is some leaked pricing and specs of what's to come, the 6 core R5's  look like they might be a nice sweet spot.

Carl2

I just looked at Newegg for the AMD cpu's, only the 8 core Ryzens are displayed with earlier versions of AMD so they are pushing the higher priced 8 cores.  I didn't even realize they were making 6 and 4 core cpu's.
Intel still has the name we'll see how AMD does.

I can't find any precise release date for the R5 and R3 but they are coming within the next few months.

Something else that stands out to me is the power consumption of these new chips, considerably lower than we have seen before. For me I would be looking at one of the 65w CPU's so probably the R5 1500 or the R7 1700. If I was to build myself a new PC then one of them would probably be my choice.

It isn't the right time for me to build though and obviously I would also need a new windows 10 disk and key, which just adds more cost.

I had seen some remarks about Intel lowering prices on the internet but it hasn't happened at Newegg, Many years ago Intel got fined for price fixing with AMD.  It seems the computers are outdated so quickly although they do keep making improvements.

Yes I agree Carl at the moment Intel haven't adjusted their prices, this might be something to do with the Ryzen performance that we are starting to see in benchmarks.

I've been watching and reading as many reviews as I can on these new CPU's and the results are interesting and not quite what many were expecting.

Intel still has the highest clock speeds especially with their Kaby Lake cores, people can overclock them to 5Ghz, the result is faster single core performance over Ryzen. The AMD R7 CPU's only seem to be able to reach 4 to 4.2 GHz.

However Ryzen takes a nice lead with multithreading, it is starting to look like AMD's hyperthreading or SMT is more effective than Intel's, software that requires multiple threads is running better on Ryzen.

I keep thinking one could buy a Intel Core i7 6th Gen for a very good price and it would easily do the job for me, the problem is there would be no M.2 and they are already moving to a faster storage.

No that isn't correct Carl Intel 6th gen also known as Skylake does fully support M.2.

You would be looking at a Z170 chipset motherboard with M.2 socket, like this one, there are also plenty of others out there.
