Quite a while back (couple of years), Data mentioned to me that I should consider switching over to SSD instead of my "old" hard drives. At the time, the prices simply didn't justify the quantity of storage. Well friends, it seems that tech has finally come to it's senses and leveled the playing field a bit better.

Unfortunately, my existing (OLD) computer of about 11 years has finally reached that point in it's lifespan where it's rapidly beginning to wave goodbye. A message was found by me in the Event Manager that was somewhat reminiscent of HAL from 2001:A Space Odyssey when Hal informed Dave that it had detected a fault in the AE-35 unit and that it was going to fail.

The message I received was: The driver has detected that device \driver\Harddisk0\DR0 has predicted that it will fail. Immediately back up your data and replace your hard dick drive. A failure may be imminent.

I didn't take too long to think about a replacement. Long story short, my new laptop has a 1 TB SSD!!
Data was right. Programs load amazingly fast and Windows boots in record time almost making me wonder if it forgot anything.

Of course, now if the time spent transferring over everything that I really want to keep and not from backing up old stuff to a new machine. Many of those old programs I simply no longer use nor want.

It's similar to Spring cleaning my system. Once everything is transferred and working properly, I shall make a Mirror Image Backup. I know Windows can perform such a Mirror Image Backup but have never tried it. Some said it was painfully slow but that might be a matter of opinion.

At any rate, Data & Freddy, Thanks for the recommendation to make the switch! Worlds of difference.

Well done Art

In all my years of working with computers the biggest single leap forward that I have seen was the introduction of SSD's, huge improvement over HDD. at least 10x the speed and some of the more recent M.2 SSD's are up to 45x the speed of HDD.

Mind boggling  :o

Freddy

Nice one Art, I am happy for you

I think once you use SSD there is no going back to HDD. I think HDD might still be useful for backups and storage though, but I have that niggle in my brain that it could fail after having a few HDDs go belly up.

Enjoy your new found speed  8)

I was getting over a minute to boot up a computer I put together, I tried a raid configuration to speed this up and got about the same boot time.  At that time the first SSD came out I spent about $500 for it which was a small fortune for me.  Amazing speed at that time for me and a respectable boot time.  When I bought this HP computer it came with a HP loaded standard drive and although I think HP puts some nice software for their computers on the drive I put a SSD in and never used their hard drive. It has a 10 sec boot.  I still use the smaller drives 250 GB is enough for me.
