I was amazed today by just how much memory has still be on the rise price wise.

I got 4G of OCZ memory in March for about £90 - now it's around £120.00.... was something like £45 before Christmas.

Is £45.00 and I bought it at the end of December 2008 for £15.00

So folks if you have any old memory kicking around now is the time to sell it on eBay.

I've got the 2Gb of Crucial memory listed to start at 99p and Buy Now of £20.  Let's see how mad people are.

I had noticed prices. Don't know the reason. The last time this happened it was because of a memory factory burning down. That was several years ago.

You are looking a DDR2 though. This is old tech and prices generally go up.

DDR3 4GB for £100 PC3-1280 Doesn't sound bad to me.

We are in a sort of transistion between DDR2 and DDR3 so I'd expect DDR3 prices to fall but not DDR2, possibly higher for them. So if you want DDR2, buy now.

For sure they are trying to get everyone to go DDR3 and the £100 for 4GIG does seem about right to me, but I also remember a while back when memory was much cheaper but it seems that its all gone up since then.

What ever is causing it, it seems to be affecting the price of graphics cards too, like this one only £500

Yeah I had wondered about old tech going up in price.  Years back I tried to get hold of an old Compaq MB and it was ridiculously expensive.

Maybe they are trying to get the market to shift like Data says... I don't think my MB does DDR3 though.

Edit : Just checked eBay, the RAM sold for £20   So £5.00 profit on something over a year old.  Neat.

DDR3 is a different slot on the mobo. Some mobos have both types.
Not sure on the amount of pins but the notch is in a different place.
If you have a mobo with both types of memory slot it will be obvious 'cos all the notches will not line up.

  Read this a few times and wanted to add,  just checked the other computer, 9 Gb of mem, pretty sure it's ddr3 1600, to upgrade I'd buy 12 Gb (6x2Gb) at $319.  I can get 6 Gb for $169 compatable with Core i7 boards and processors.  Seems very reasonable to me, I've paid more for less memory and slower memory in the past.
  Just checked out the ddr2 mem, 13 pages, prices start at about $15, and on page 13 are about $600 for CORSAIR XMS2 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400). This is at newegg again, don't mean to mention them again, just where I do the majority of my shopping.

What can I say? I always want more of everything.

But in reality I don't hit the 4GB limit yet. I'm a gamer and am getting close with the latest games and having a 1GB graphics card but 4GB is fine.
A medium to heavy use office will require more (8GB or 9GB for i7) and maybe 3D workstation but a home PC?

Carl what are you doing with your PC that is using so much RAM?

  Again these were bought this way, the one I'm using now is a Q8200 at 2.3 Gh Quad, 6Gb ram, 750 Tb HD, Asus.  The other is the Gateway, i7 quad, 950 at 3 Gh, 9 gb ram, 1 Tb Gb HD.  I bought the Asus at a local store and used it to get on the internet and bought the Gateway.  Both had vista in them when Win 7 was out, really think this pulled the prices way down.  Both came with the free upgrade offer.
  Too much memory, HD's to big, but a good price.  I still think about buying a full tower case, a newer motherboard and moving the gateway CPU but probably won't do it.
