Astronomy Picture of the Day
This is a cool pic of the ISS transiting the sun.
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap100523.html
And the main link is this (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/) one
Very cool, so tiny too really 8)
Nice pics :)
I thought it was a sunspot at first too.
on all APOD pics ... click to embiggen
'Mystic Mountain' (in da Gallery) pic is the latest from Hubble.
Res not big enough to do full HD.
2 versions in 'Open' catogory 16:9 and 14.4:9(16:10)
Check out the 1050/1080 catogories in 'Gallery' for more Hubble pics

You can find a load of quality content on that site when you go digging.
Excellent website :)
Todays APOD (04/06/10) is this one.
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap100604.html
I like it and will prob make a wallpaper in due course...
Today's (05/06/10) pic is Thor's Helmet and it's in a decent res so wallpaper available in 1050 and 1080.

Some new cool APOD pics
Lightning Over Athens
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap100720.html
And this lovely wide field pic which I shall make a wallpaper of at some time...
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap100719.html
Amazing pics :)
Have to agree with Freddy, Amazing pics, I can see why you want to turn the wider field one into a wallpaper, I don't like bright wallpapers, too much on the eyes but that one is perfect.
I guess the mosaic ones are done by a computer or an extremely patient artist. ::)
I like this pic. Not really astro but hey, cool pic
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap100803.html
New pic release from Hubble too.
http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2010/2010/25/image/a/
Another release from Hubble. Interesting story (http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2010/2010/26/full/) and ok pic.
Not sure of its wallpaper potential. Any comments?
This is a cool APOD cross section (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap100831.html) of the Milky Way. It has links to all the objects below the image. Mouse over to lose the anotations.
And a link to the main page that changes every day. APOD (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/)
I noticed the picture has changed today to "Earth and Moon from MESSENGER", still a good though.
Ooops, my bad. Forgot to link from the archive section, did the main page that changes every day. Now corrected.
Cool APOD pic today entitled A Laser Strike at the Galactic Center
Click here (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap100906.html) to view and click the pic on that page for highest res.
BTW the laser is for adaptive/corrective optics. One is software and one is distorting the mirrors, can never remember which way round.
Another cool pic mosaic of 17 degrees of sky called...
Trunk to Bubble (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap100909.html)
Mouse over for annotations. If only you could see this stuff with the naked eye.
That's a nice one, I've set it as my desktop for now.
Need bionic eyes :o
Found this cool APOD pic of a few days ago called Arp 188 and the Tadpole's Tidal Tail (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap100926.html)
Nice to see gravity in action. There's a smaller galaxy (lower right) that has a jet from its center. Cool.
Been some cool stuff on APOD (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/). Bookmark it if you haven't already.
Here's some of 'em...

This is a collection of galaxies called Stephan's Quintet (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap101120.html).
I like.
Not been posting here for a while. Been busy playing F1 2010 and Gran Turismo.

They are all good, but the first one "A Dark Dune Field in Proctor Crater on Mars" is the oddest.
Didn't have a clue what it was until I read about it.
A selection of pics from APOD.

Notice the ISS on the partial eclipse?
Wow the ISS!!! We can't suspect a fake, the site is so serious.
But this is AMAZING! 8)
No fakes here GT40. Real life is far better than fiction if you look hard enough.
The latest selection from APOD.
The Seagull Nebula (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap110112.html). Had to put this in as it's the nickname of our local football team.

The Antikythera Mechanism (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap110109.html).
This is a cool mechanism that was made by the Greeks and way ahead of it's time.
And now it is rebuilt with lego...
I read an article of this lego version and the guy who built it had to design his own differential gears to get the right ratios, then send plans to lego to get them to make them.

Anyone know the music? Clue ... haircut.
Very cool 8)
I remember the music from Platoon and they used it in an old game I used to play called Homeworld. Very atmospheric.
Ive heard the music before and like it, I think it might even be in my music collection but what it is, hmmm :scratch-head: not sure.
Good little vid.
GOT IT :D.
I just knew I had this piece of music, even if I did nearly give myself a Brain Rupture trying to remember it and searching my collection.
It is......
Adagio For Strings by Barber who, apparently, was a bit of a mover and shaker in the music industry a few years back 8).
Yes, amazing video.
By the way, the music? Written under the video, with a link to Wikipedia. :bounce:
It is indeed, Hell's teeth.
I knew that, ::) :sign-oops:
I didn't notice it was written under the vid. DOH!
Barber's Adagio for strings of course. Hence my haircut clue.
Also done recently (2000) by William Orbit. Full synth version and short dance version (has a drum beat). These will be what you have Data 'cos I gave you them.
This is the one Snowy is talking about, found on Grooveshark, to play it click the little play button next to the name William Orbit.

This is the last pic front the Mars rover, Spirit.
Farewell Spirit, you did well.
I want to see mining robots. I feel it's the only way we'll see manned missions to the Moon and Mars.
What a shot of the shuttle and the ISS.
http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110608.html
With an explanation of how the shot was taken.
Right click and 'save target as' for hi res shot. (6048 x 4032)
Now that's a very cool image!
I would post a link to one of my favorite APOD images, but I'm still on probation. :)
[edit]Oh, wait! Maybe I can now! http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110511.html (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110511.html) YAY!!!
I am fairly selective of what I post here. All are good, some more sciencey, some more good pics.
I recommend checking out APOD (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html) every day.
Some recent links...
The Great Carina Nebula (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110609.html).
Eclipsed Moon in the Milky Way (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110617.html).
Lightning Eclipse from the Planet of the Goats (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110618.html).
I've made a Google Gadget for my home page that shows a thumb of the current APOD image, along with the description for the page. APOD has been on my "MUST visit" list for a number of years now.
There have been some good pics in APOD recently inc. the one I made the latest wallpaper from.
This is todays (31st Aug) and is a roll cloud. I have seen this before over Brighton but no where near this big.
Made me go wow. Link here (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110831.html). This one is in Wisconsin.
Wow indeed, scary too :o
Wish I had seen that in real life, amazing 8)
Cool aurora pic in APOD today.
Click the image for hi res version. I will prob wallpaper this pic soon.

Found this cool time lapse video taken from the ISS on APOD (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap111121.html).
Video is on Vimeo so here's the HD link...
Earth | Time Lapse View from Space, Fly Over | NASA, ISS (http://vimeo.com/32001208)
Thanks, that was great 8)
Looks so nice from up there.
I agree with Freddy. Great stuff, Snowy! Thank you! :)
I tried to identify the places the ISS was passing over by the patterns of the city lights, but I was only able to positively identify Egypt in a couple of scenes. Anyone recognize any other places?
Enjoyed that, thanks Snowy, pretty sure I saw Italy around 02:10.
If I knew what the "real time" indexes were for the video (and the playback speed), I could write a script in Celestia to mimic the view, and then run the script slower, to pick out more geography. :)
(actually, that sounds like a neat sort of challenge. Hmmm...)
I'm sure your probably right Dave, what ever you just said. :scratch-head:
Well, according to the website, that footage was shot between August and October. If I knew the exact times each scene was taken at, I cuold duplicate that footage in a program called Celestia (http://www.shatters.net/celestia) by writing a script that causes the program's "camera" to be centered from the ISS, and capture it's motion relative to the... I'm getting a wee bit too technical, aren't I? Oops?
Suffice it to say that it would be rather cool. :) I may just do a video of it without the time indexes, if/when I ever get both FRAPS and Celestia installed. :)
Yes, of course, stupid me, but I still say I saw Italy. :P
I just like da pritty pictures. :hmm:
Sounds like far too much effort, Dave.
I've watched it twice now and think I saw Italy as well. Judging by the aurora, there's prob Canada, Russia and China in there somewhere.
Found a good scale animation/ zoomable thing on APOD.
There's still alot of room at the bottom.
http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap120312.html (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap120312.html)
I saw that page last night, and played with it for over an hour. There's a lot of info on all of the various things shown that you can read by clicking on whatever interests you. Granted, the information seems to be geared for a younger audience, but it's still interesting. :)
Found this on APOD (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap120411.html). I have never seen geostationary satellites.
Look out for a chain of non moving 'stars' from about 3/4 of the way to top left to the center of the pic and beyond. They come and go but stay in the same position.
Found this little vid on APOD (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap121114.html).
Called Our Story in One Minute.
Our Story in 1 Minute (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSt9tm3RoUU#ws)
:tick: Good vid Snowy, and I believe it too :)
Except for the "one minute" part. They missed by almost 28 seconds, not counting the credits. :P
Was that the big bang at the beginning ? I thought that was in doubt these days ? Last time I saw anything they were talking about inflation theory and stuff like dat..
Found this cool image of trees on Mars. Well not really but they do look like it.
http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap121125.html (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap121125.html)
Notice left of center there is a dust plume where a landslide was occuring whilst this shot was being taken.
Seeing as Legion is beating me to all the news articles, I'll just keep the good pictures rolling in.
Found this one on APOD (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap121214.html). An eclipse using a 180deg fisheye lens. Cool.
Very cool, Snowy! I really like that one. :)
I have never seen clouds anywhere near looking like this. APOD. (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap130227.html)
WOW!
Not sure how this is astronomy but it's a cool pic none the less. APOD. (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap130311.html)
Very cool picture :D
And another one, from the 15th:

Cool. :)
Opportunity has been on Mars for 10 years. This pic released through APOD (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html).

They need to send someone up to clean the poor thing.
Very interesting to see how that dirt has built up 8)
And I thought my car was dirty! :o :D
Found this funny star guide on APOD (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap140609.html) the other day.
Go get those pesky aliens. 4 lasers should do it...
http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap140623.html (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap140623.html)
Hehe, very cool, however I think they might be set to stun. ;D
Cool cloud colours.

Very nice 8)
