The Avro Vulcan is one of my favorite planes. I've made sure I put the "Avro" bit in incase DD or Diesel get pedantic on my ass too.  :o

Here's the Wiki and some pics...

For those interested in 1982 and all that, 'Vulcan 607' is a very good read.

It WILL be fine !...

Hey, I'm a life long member of the Pedant's society. I'm just not sure if it should be Pedants' or Pedant's.

Keep up the banter, it makes me giggle.

It all depends on whether you're referring to a Single pedant, or multiple pedants, Snowy. If I'm a pedant, and it's my society, then the apostrophe comes before last S. If we're all pedants, and it's OUR society, then the apostrophe comes after. You see, it all boils down to...

Um... Just realized I was being pedantic. Oops? :P

I'm going for after the 's', seeing as we're a group of pedants, rather then me being on my own.

Here's a couple I took of the Vulcan at Lowestoft Air Show in 2010.

I had fun spotting them on Google Earth, there are quite a few on the ground still, some in a bad state others not so bad.

I think this is the only one still flying.  Notice that the seagull fancied a race.

A beautiful aircraft, my late fathers favorite!!!

The aircraft in Freddy's pics is XH-558, it is still flying but is not publically or RAF funded, at the top of the page you will find the "Vulcan to the Sky" link.

What this private group has achieved is amazing when you consider it!!!

Interesting fact for you, the Vulcan although a large bomber used fighter style controls, when introduced in the 50's surprised everyone by doing a full loop at the Farnborough airshow somethiing that no-one at the time though such a large aircraft could do.

And to follow up on snowy's original post the subject of the book Vulcan 607 is the Black Buck raids during the Falklands war, at the time the longest distance an aircraft had flown to bomb a target and back:

The book is a damned good read and definately recommended

I remember that about the longest bombing run.  Weren't they about to be sent to the scrap heap too, then were recalled for the conflict ?

And yes that group has an interesting story, there was a program on TV a few months back all about it.  I think they got some money from the lottery but it was not enough.  They have done very well since though.

The Vulcans were due to be retired and were just a few months from the scrap heap.

To make the missions viable they had to reinstate the air to air refueling rigs which had been disabled years before, including having to visit museums in places like the United States to "Borrow" the refueling probes!!!

11 Victors were required to refuel the single Vulcan on the trip there and then back again, it was carefully orchestrated but very nearly went very wrong!!!!
