With less than 2 weeks until the Mayan Calendar ends, some of the cable/satellite networks have been putting out a lot of garbage, such as Prophets of Doom, and Countdown to Armageddon. Personally, I find it all rather silly, but there are some folks out there who are really, honestly frightened by the prospect. So, for the sake of argument, and assuming that it's true, and E.T. will be coming to turn the Earth into a giant, flaming crop circle, what would you do in the intervening 13 days?

Keep a stiff upper lip in true British fashion and act like nothing is wrong...in the manner of the Titanic sinking  :D

The bit starting with Roy Castle really cracks me up.

QuoteI was wondering if I might pop outside sir and see if anything's happening.

Oh! but you haven't had your pudding yet and it's strawberry mousse.

Reminds me of a story I read, in the HHGTTG, told by one Arthur Dent, about him, a complete stranger, and a packet of Rich Tea Biscuits. :)

This is not fiction. It actually happened to DNA. We'd call them biscuits but that's been changed to cookies.

Hehe I like it.  I have that book on my wishlist, must get around to buying it soon.

I always liked that story. That it's a "real life experience" of the author only adds to the charm, I think. Of course, that entire section of the saga is high on my list of "favorite bits", and my image of Fenchurch is rather enticing, as well. :D

The Salmon of Doubt is an ok book. If you're a fan you'll like it.

It's just a collection of stuff his family and Stephen Fry got off of his laptop. It has the only 4 chapters of the 3rd Dirk Gently novel of the same name and various other quips and quotes.

Cool, I am a big fan of his Dirk Gently books too, wish he had done more.  I was really disappointed with the TV version they did, it was all totally wrong for me.  The character of Dirk sucked, despite me liking the actor in some things he was not the Dirk I had imagined or indeed I think Admas had described.  IMHO anyway...

This thread appears to have gone off topic to a DNA appreciation club. I agree with the Dirk Gently comments on the TV series. I found him less mystic and more con artist.

Back to the Myans. What a wonderful people with great artwork and an understanding of the Earth good enough to make a calender that outlived them. Shame about alot of modern Humans. Let's hope it wont be a self fulfilling prophecy.
