Seeing as I got more posts in my APOD thread by asking what the background music was, I thought I'd startup this thread and see where it goes.
Here's the first one...
Am I the half of half and half,
Or am I the half that's whole.
Got to be one with all my halves,
It's my worthy earthly goal.
This one is fairly obscure from 1983. No googling the lyrics you cheats.
Whomever guesses right has to do the next one. Just pick a fav from your youth.
I somehow think I should know this, and I think it rings a little bell but without a google I don't think I'm going to get it.
I puposely picked one I thought you wouldn't get.
I'm pished and it's 1:35 am and I'm not giving it away yet.
3 points available for band/song/album.
I will give 1 of these away PM sunday after I sober up. Go on and google it and see if you're any the wiser.
All spelling mistakes due to red wine.
The song title is 'Clay'. Shall I reveal all and do an easier one?
I got it from google.
Echo And The Bunnymen - Clay

Ok, how about this one:
Zoo time is she and you time
The mammals are your fav'rite type
You'd better want her tonight.
Tell me Data which version do you require?, the original by Sparks, or, the cover version by The Darkness.
For me it has to be the original:-
This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Use.
Ok, so this should be very easy, but, full title please.
The clouds were afraid one ten in the shade and the pavements were steaming.
USE, or US even. Sorry, Dyslexic keyboard I'm afraid!!!.
It's your turn now Diesel!!
I never knew they were the lyrics. I knew the song, of course.
If you'd put...
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat.
I may have got it.
Here's the vid for those who are wondering what we're talking about or just want to hear it.
I refer back to my last but one, post.

Hmmm :scratch-head:
I googled the sentence and I found this:
http://www.datahopa.co.uk/forum/general-discussion/guess-the-lyrics/msg1911/
Hope it helps. 8)
And also:
http://www.chordscenter.net/bobby-goldsboro-summer-the-first-time--lyrics_song-vhrtnj.html
You found it then GT40. Your turn.
Was being dim and didn't notice your lyrics .. Diesel :-\
Here's the song for your listening pleasure...
I would never have got that one, the vid was worth watching.
LOL GT you found this page in the google result :shades:
Yes Data, just google
"The clouds were afraid one ten in the shade and the pavements were steaming."
Only one result. Your forum is famous. 8)
*wonders if GT40 realises it is a game* ::)
I'm working on a song written by myself for Lady Gaga and totally unknown. You will just have to find the title. Coming soon. Maybe. :-X
Haha! Okay then I will wait. But in the meantime you need to do the next set of lyrics for us to guess.
Is it, Silence Is Golden by The Tremeloes GT40? ;).
Lol Diesel, this one?
Now I think I must choose something else.
With a thousand lies
And a good disguise
Hit 'em right between the eyes
Hit 'em right between the eyes
When you walk away
Nothing more to say
See the lightning in your eyes
See 'em running for their lives
Aha, lyrics.
Shame I have no clue who they're by. Well not using Mk1 brain.
*nervously holding my hands together, resisting the urge to google. Must google but ...
:-X
Just a little help: it was also in "Phantom of the Paradise", one of my three favorite movies. Yes, I'm not 20 y.o. ;D
Thanks for the tip GT40. A quick consultation with one of Teens living here for free :'(, confirmed your little ditty as, You'll Go Far, Kid by the Offspring, is this correct?.
That seems right to me. Carefull when clicking 'cos there's a rude word.
I've never heard of them. Sounds a lot like Green Day to me. Your go Diesel.
Bravo Diesel and Snowcrash! Now a video made with some images from the movie. No "visible" rude word inside. ;D
The rude word is still there.
I have never heard of the original film or the re-make. I assume the song was from the re-make.
Doesn't look like Diesel wants a go so I'll have another.
My, my,
Sun is pie.
There's fodder for the cannons,
And the guilty ones can all sleep safely,
All sleep safely.
I know that one Snowy, and I didn't have to google it :o
Might even name the song and artist later, but don't want to jump right in there.
Is that XTC, forget the song, maybe Senses working overtime or something like that ?
Thats what I thought it was too Freddy.
Think I have a CD single of the song somewhere.
Maybe that one was too easy.
That's one to Freddy. I'm not sctually keeping score.
So, that'd be your go Freddy, unless Diesel wants to jump in as I feel I nicked his go.
Ok, not sure if it is easy or not. Even if the XTC one might have been easy, I was pleased I got it :)
Here goes, probably too easy, but you never know :
By the way, did I break your heart?
Please excuse me, I never meant to break your heart
So sorry, I never meant to break your heart
But you broke mine
Aha a Marillion fan.
Got that one straight away.
Kayleigh, is it too late to say I'm sorry?
I'm playing with the lyrics a little on this one. Only giving you the ones I think you may not get.
A mulatto, an albino
A mosquito, my libido.
And I forget just why I taste
Sorry for the delay, been under a Higher Management Directive by the Long Haired General :bottom:.
I know these lyrics, I'm sure I know these lyrics, mustn't Google :scratch-head:.
I can't believe no one has got this song yet. You'll kick yourself when you realise what it is.
less sneaky lyrics are...
A mulatto, an albino
A mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey, yay
And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
still no idea
and then: "I found it hard, it's hard to find", loool!!
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Of course I cheatted, I googled, it doesn't count. I don't want to win. Please.
Oh well, whatever, nevermind
hello, hello, hello, how low
Well stop giving the answer if you don't want a go GT40. :o
I do like GT's answers, even if he doesn't want a go, half the fun of it :)
Jolly old jape this, all in the name of a bit of fun, that's all ;D.
Right, back on track, here's a really obscure one for you all.
Hey and away we go,
Through the grass,
Across the snow
Big brown beasty
Big round face
I'd rather be with you than flying through space.
Google that if you like, best of luck. :P
Didn't mean to sound offensive. Carry on GT40 esp. if the lyrics fit the google search.
I have no clue as to this song. Neither has Google but I expect Diesels post to be there soon.
Did you write it? A family member?
Lol Snowcrash! ;D
I confirm I don't play anymore. The winner is:
the first one who will google "I'd rather be with you than flying through space".
Oh! I got ;D
Did I google? Sorry can't remember. :mutley:
To be honest I've never heard the song, so how I know the lyrics :scratch-head:
Mike Oldfield - On horseback My turn, give me a while to come up with a stonker, unless someone else wants to jump in.
Very well done Data, I didn't expect that one to be found quite so quickly. I've been thinking about clues all day, never under-estimate the power of the inter-net ;D.
Yeah I like a challenge and when Snowy said he couldn't find it on google, it got me searching :D
How about this one, is it too obvious? Maybe
She met a man she liked she thought she'd stay with him
When he informed on them they did away with him
I don't know but have worked out a way of using google in reverse as it were.
Think of a song you think it may be and then google that song to see if the lyrics fit.
It definitely is not Stool Pigeon by Kid Creole.
Trying to get some clue from the 'informed' bit.
They're only easy if you know the song. Was surprised how long to get my Nirvana song and Freddy's Marillion song I heard the lyrics as I read it. I did own 'Script for a jesters tear' on vinyl.
QuoteI did own 'Script for a jesters tear' on vinyl.
I think I still have mine somewhere. Loved them, listened to
Misplaced Childhood just the other day in fact. ;D
I wonder why you continue the game. Not fun at all.
Always the same winner: Big Brother Google.
(By the way of course, the answer is Boney M - Ma Baker). ;D
I know Data's musical taste at least a bit seeing as we've written tracks together.
Didn't know you liked Boney M
Some lyrics from memory...
Some people tell you that they're your friends
You believe them, you need them for what's round the river bend
make sure that you're recieving the signals they send
'cos brother you've only got two hands to lend.
If Data doesn't get this I'll be surprised.
If anyone else gets this I'll be pleasantly surprised.
Believe it or not I do have "The best of Boney M" CD, I converted it to MP3 a few years back, Ma Baker is one of the best tracks on it, that and Daddy Cool too.
Snowcrash of course I know that one ;D, and I don't need to google it. Have to agree with you, I would be pleasantly surprised if anyone gets it without a google.
Boney M, disco, tons of of cool memories. English is not my native language.
I didn't understand the lyrics. I was lucky. ;D
For GT40 only...
Bonsoir
Ton vehicule n'a pas l`air d`avoir de passager
Peux-tu: Veux tu me recevoir
Sans trop te deranger?
Mes bottes ne feront pas trop d`echos dans ton couloir
Data should get this one too. Same band as last lyrics.
Oops, sorry, late, was AFK:
The Stranglers - La Folie
Google translate get this...
Good evening
Your car does not `have` air passenger
Can you: Will you receive me
Without too much bother?
My boots will not make too many echoes in your hallway
How close is that?
That translation is odd :scratch-head:
Looks and reads like spam, all you needed was a link under it to a pharmacy site
GT40, how close is the google translation of the La Folie lyrics I posted?
And here's the video.
Snowcrash, this story is very odd and funny. I didn't know the song. I thought it was a joke, a test for me, English lyrics you had translated to French with Google!! So I translated the supposed translation to English (reverse engineering, lol).
Finally I found the solution but all that is really crazy.
And yes, the translation was not so bad, maybe the first time I got a not totally ridiculous result from Google. :)
Glad to keep you amused.
Who's go is it now, I think I've lost the plot
I guess if nothing else we can play this game and then watch the videos after, so how about this.
The rhythm is calling
Alone in the night as the daylight brings a cold empty silence
The warmth of your hand and a cold grey sky
It fades to the distance
No time to waste. ;D ;D ;D
I think I missed this one out too.
Snowcrash, look what I found.
No need to guess the lyrics, JJ shows us them :D
This is such an unruly thread lol
Yeah it happens sometimes I guess, maybe Snowy should have called this one Classic songs from your youth.
I still like reading or watching the posts, its all fun :)
Oh yesh still fun :D
And this one, parodying Bob Dylan ;D
Oh yes, music from our miss spent youth. Here's a single line of lyric harping back to a time I had just started my Apprenticeship, well almost then, a time when I did know I knew everything.
The band was playing Dixie double four time.
Aha ! Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing ? Did not look it up on google !
Well done Freddy, now if only I knew how to post a video, (hint hint, calling Data, hint hint)
Like this one. 'tis easy.
Diesel check out this post:
http://www.datahopa.co.uk/forum/video/embed-videos-into-forum/
Once you find the video on Youtube, copy the address of the video "in the address bar of Chrome" and paste it into the Youtube tags in your post.
Sorry I know it sounds techy, im not that good at explaining things.
Just play around with it, you will get it. :)
PS great track that "Sultans of Swing", I had the answer in my mind but it wouldn't come to the surface.
Here's the next one :
I remember the old country
They call the emerald land
And I remember my hometown
Before the war began
What! No one knows this one. :scratch-head:
I thought that would be easy.... Clue : Thin Lizzy connection.
Ok you can use Google :P
In that case it's Gary Moore, Wild Frontier. :D
I've never heard the song, not that I can remember, and please forgive me but I haven't even heard of Gary Moore.
Re the Thin Lizzy connection, was he a guitarist for the band?
Yes he played guitar for them for a while on different occasions. Also well know as a solo artist. Axe legend, blues...that kinda thing.
He died in February :(
I've been trying to rack my brain for Phil Lynot songs. :-\
I do know Garry Moore but not this track.
Been trying to think of a dance track to put in here but saying
do you know the one that goes...
na-naa na-naa na-nat-na-nat na na-na-na-na doesn't quite work. ???
And I wish I named this thread '80s music videos'
Quote from: Freddy on April 07, 2011, 17:21:05 PM

I had a feeling he might have died after reading some of the comments under the video on YouTube. RIP Gary.
Yeah! Snowy dance tracks might not be that easy to do, I bet if you keep racking that brain something will come out
This one is too easy, absolutely no google allowed. I will know if you've cheated ;)
Where the image breaks down
Will you visit me please?
If I open my door
I feel I should know this but can't fit a tune to it in my head yet.
Well, that was easy, all ways round
That's it Diesel, and no cheating either
Snowcrash you can kick yourself for not knowing that.
Kicking myself and waiting with bated breath to see Diesel's lyrics.
Ok Snowcrash, hold tight, here we go.
I have been trying to think of something that may be ironic, so here goes:-
The crowd roared as they started to race,
Around the track they drove at a deadly pace.
Thought I had this one
Yello "The Race"
But sadly not correct :(
I'm attacking the illusion but the stopping drives me mad.
I need it and I want it but I haven't got a clue.
I do believe these are 2 lines from 'The Race'
Ok, here's a little more:-
No one knows what happened that day
How his car over turned in flames
Still none the wiser. So googled it.
Supprisingly I do actually know this song. Ricky Valance, Tell Laura I Love Her.
What decade is this from? 60s I assume.
With these lyrics I shall drag this thread into the 90s
Sonically we're in control
We're the diamond in your soul
The 60's indeed. Although the answer is correct, the video is not as it is a cover version. However, as no video is available of Richie Valance actually performing this song, given that he died with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper, well done Snowcrash. Now, where are my list of 90's lyric's, oh yes, I remember, on Google. ;)
I know the song, but I did have to google to make sure.
Leftfield Original
Plenty of videos to choose from on YouTube, but I found this live version, good to see the band, but not the best live performance I have ever seen.
Like the song though.
I have some fond memories of this song and the intro still makes the hairs stand up on my neck.
Not bad for a live version and she fills the jump suit well. :P
So, we've had the 60s, 70s, 80s and now 90s. Anyone for the naughties? Data?
I thought the jumpsuit was highly educational too ;)
Ahh! the naughties, yeah there have been a few songs that grabbed my attention.
This one:
Blue, blue, blue,
waves they crash,
as time goes by,
so hard to catch.
I couldn't leave this one unsolved so here is the answer:
Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me
Has this thread died a death or does that mean back to the 80s?
Anyone is welcome to put up any lyrics they like. I'll leave it until someone else starts again.
Well Snowcrash, you should know better than anyone that nothing actually dies, it just changes it state of being.
Anyhow, some more lyrics for your delectation:-
The whole things lost,
I don't know why,
You have to laugh,
Or else you'll cry.
I have the tune going round in my head, yes I do know this one, but who was it and what was the song called.
No can't remember :'(
I've had the same feeling since reading the lyrics.
All I can come up with is
You have to live or else you die.
Being the next line ish.
In a ska stylie?
Ok, the next line's are
You have to live
Or else you'll die
I believe this was a one hit wonder, although I could well be wrong there, however, a local group, to me anyway.
Bit fishy this one isn't it. ;)
I've been to the pub wiv me mates and we can all sing this song but no-one can come up with the band so... I googled it.
The Piranhas - Tom Hark a Brighton band but if you watch, the original is by 'Elias and his Zigzag Flutes' from 1958
and the lyrics are (http://www.justsomelyrics.com/460877/The-Piranhas-Tom-Hark-Lyrics)...
The whole things
daft,
I don't know why,
You have to laugh,
Or else you'll cry.
My go. How about...
I don't advise
And I don't criticise
I just know what I like
With my own eyes.
Sometimes.
Now I have heard it I remember the song. There was no way I would have remembered the band though. :scratch-head:
No guesses for these lyrics then. Added next line at the bottom.
I don't advise
And I don't criticise
I just know what I like
With my own eyes.
Sometimes.
If you know what I mean.
clue:- fashion moving quickly.
Not wanting to spoil the fun I didn't reply to this one, yes I knew it.
Odd though, after listening to the video its not how I remember the song at all, it's like the video is not the same mix or something.
Maybe just me.
Depeche Mode - Clean
Well I spent a few hours trying to come up with some lyrics, then eureka...
You wont get this one
Mouldy old dough
Mouldy old dough
Mouldy old dough
Mouldy old dough
Oh, how I remember this one. Early Seventies, TOTP.
The main reason I remember this so clearly is because I would alter the Lyric's to include my Sisters name, for which, I earned myself a thorough Beating and destroyed a metal waste bin with just the use of my back as well.
Happy Day's. ;D
Anyway, here you are
I looked up the lyrics for the song, its mouldy old dough repeated 4 times.
However in the video he says dirty old man, this makes me think you might have the wrong song there Diesel, but I guess its close enough .
BTW Diesel, It's your go.
Ok, another nice easy one and, I have checked the lyrics Snowcrash, hopefully only Daft once.
We are programmed to receive
You can check-out any time you like
But you can never leave.
Hotel California ?
Nicely done Freddy, by The Eagles. That sure didn't hang around long. ;D
Your'e turn I do believe Freddy.
What, no video... :sign-rock-on:
OK here's mine:
The cities a flood and our love turns to rust
We're beaten and blown by the wind, trampled in dust
I'll show you a place high on a desert plain
Cool classic Eagles tune.
Freddy & Diesel seem to be more rockers then other things.
Still :scratch-head: with Freddy's lyrics.
Need a clue ?
I, for one, do need a clue.
Irish Band
I felt I knew this and I have just stumbled upon it whilst listening to one of my play lists.
U2, Where The Streets Have No Name.
Here we go again!.
Then came the Churches then came the Schools
Then came the Lawyers then came the Rules.
Enjoy. :D
I have a feeling this is from the 70's maybe early 80's, but that's a guess.
A clue might be in order.
Right you are, here's a clue.
Product from the same performers I've posted before.
Still don't seem to be getting very far with this. I thought there would be no problems.
Another clue then, bit cryptic though.
Founding fathers installed Morse along Highway. :sign-evil-laugh:
Clue makes sense when I Googled the song.
Dire Straits - Telegraph.
I'm not a major fan. I know the main hits but not this one.
I have been trying to do a different band/artist each time but hey, no rules here.
I will keep on the rock theme and here's one Data prob. wont get.
The rusty wire that holds the cork
That keeps the anger in
Gives way
And suddenly it's day again.
Maybe not the happiest of songs but one I can play the main chord progressions of. Badly.
I really should have got that one. I used to listen to Love over Gold all the time when I was at university. Nice to rediscover it :)
As for the Snowcrash's song lyrics...hmmm...
It's no good, I'm fit to burst here.
Pink Floyd Two Suns In The Sunset.
Bit heavy going for me. Would love to post again, however, I would pick something from my vinyl collection if only I could listen to it but my amp is currently still at the menders. ;)
Change of heart.
I don't know what to do
I'm always in the dark
Living in a powder keg
Giving off sparks
Bonnie Tyler....Total eclipse of the? my? a? heart
Amazingly she didn't get that voice by smoking.
OK. It's the female Rod Stewart.
I knew that ;D
Ashamed to admit... I quite like it. :-[
Yeah it's not so bad really and she's a bit nuts which I like
OK here's one for ya :
With a torch in your pocket
And the wind at your heels
You climbed on the ladder
And you know how it feels
Tell me Snowcrash, when you started this thread, did you ever believe it would run anywhere close to this long?.
My guess was it would be popular, everyone has some music they hold dear.
But not this popular. Not sure whether to change the subject name to '80s music videos' or the 'thread that keeps on giving' ???
I think it is the longest thread now.
OK here is a clue... Satellite.
I cheated, quite a fitting song for the site too.
Waterboys - The Whole of the MoonYou haven't lived until you've seen the whole of the moon at least once :sign-peace:
Well done Google ;)
Your go Data :)
Ok how about this, only one line of lyrics, they should ring a bell.
"I bought it in Primrose Hill from a bloke from Brazil"
I did know your song Freddy but didn't get it on the lyrics.
I can't hold back on Data's song. That's gotta be I like driving in my car by Madness.
I'm torn between two songs from the same band/artist. I'm going for the more obscure though they were both singles.
I could be the catalyst that sparks the revolution
I could be an inmate in a long-term institution
In truth, I'd be the latter :-\ :P 8) :o
What a Waste?. :scratch-head: What a cracker. I only googled to find the vid, Ian Dury and the Blockheads.
Here's a little number I've always found very thought provoking, although I'm not quite sure what the songs about?. :scratch-head:
From the moments I could talk
I was ordered to listen.
Another cryptic clue for you.
Singer.
Rocket designer without his son, is after feline, I hear. ;)
I'm thinking the clue could allude to Cat Stevens but I don't know any of his songs.. Didn't he become a Buddhist or something and change his name ?
Feline = Cat
Rocket designer without son = Stephenson('s Rocket) ... without son = Stevens ( I hear )
That must have been a good clue, I say that because me and my other half worked it out too, like Freddy but also like Freddy we don't know the name of any of his songs.
So here is the next best thing :D
(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3f/Stephenson%27s_Rocket_drawing.jpg)
I'm not a Cat Stevens fan either. The only song I know is 'the first cut is the deepest'
But this one is 'Father and Son'. Yes, I googled it. ???
This one was inspired by Diesel and his cryptic clues thread.
Data will get this but no one else will without Googling, I bet.
You're given two sets of clues
With the answers all the same
And a two-speed crossword
Called 'love in the suds'
Got this one straight away, I doubt anyone else has even heard of the band let alone the song.
Tones On Tail
WarI found quite a few Tones On Tail tracks on Youtube, didn't expect that.
I see that this thread has been a little quiet for a while and, indeed Data was the last with a correct answer and hasn't posted, so I thought I would.
So, here's goes.
You drink your coffee and, I drink my tea, and
We're sitting here all alone thinking, what will be, will be.
To me this is a cracking little ditty.
It's getting kinda late now.
Not sure if I remember or not >:D :o
Took me a while to grasp that Snowcrash had answered with more lyrics from the song, I recognised "It's getting kinda late now" more than Diesels clue.
A classic 80's song.
Hazel O'Connor - Will you?
Cool song. I think she did 'Breaking Glass' as well.
Didn't know that song was called 'Will You' but it's one of those songs that make the hairs on my neck stand up. And I like it.
There might be more than one song that has these lyrics, but Im only after the right one :mutley:
The rhythm is calling
I think, possibly, this lyric is from a song that is one of my all time favourites. From the early 80's. The band were part of the New Romantic scene. Could it possibly be this,
Modified about a dozen times but got it in the end. I just hope I'm right after all that effort. :D
Yeah that’s the one, Ultravox Vienna, Snowy and me saw them perform it live at the Brighton Centre, years back now. Had all their albums and still have lots of their mp3’s in my collection.
I don't think I would've got that from the lyric.
Never been my fav song of theirs but good none the less.
Another from the early 80's.
The first picture of you.
Again, enjoy. :)
I assume you mean this one by the Lotus Eaters.
Come on Diesel, you've used the title of the track.
I know, but sometimes the best place to hide something is in the wide open. Clearly not this time. :'(
I did google it for the band name which didn't come to mind but I could hear the song in me head.
So, how about this one...
Now I'm fully grown,
And I know where it's at,
Late song from this band, early 90s.
No takers?
Somehow I stayed thin,
While the other guys got fat.
Are the next lines. With an extra clue of...
Is this band the opposite of good?
The opposite of good is bad so it must be
Big Audio Dynamite - Rush
I feel that again Snowcrash has come up with a song that only a few might know, saying that the lead singer is Mick Jones formally from the The Clash.
There were plenty of video to choose from so I went for one that had the lyrics in.
If you don't know B.A.D. then shame on you. They've done some great songs like E=MC². That ² key comes in really handy :) and many others.
And technically this is B.A.D. II with a different line up.
So... Is this a private party? Or can anyone join in? :)
And on a level between 1 and 10, how obscure can I get (provided it's cool to join in, that is)?
Officially  Its my go but jump in there Dave, give us some lyrics if you like.
Hmm, as obscure as level 5 should be ok ;D, but if its too hard we will probably end up cheating.
As I'm not yet familiar with all of the rules, and as I also have yet to go through every post in this thread, I think I'll defer to you at this time. It is, after all, your turn. :)
[edit] Ok, I've read through all ELEVEN pages, and amazed myself that I only got around 10% of the songs right off. Of course, the British bands that didn't get famous across the pond were impossible for me, but that's to be expected. I personally would have used the lyrics from Roller Girl for my Dire Straits song, since Sultans of Swing was so popular, and RG wasn't quite as... But that's just me. I've got lots of ideas, most of which are 6-7 on the obscurity scale, so I'll have to put on my thinking cap, and try to come up with something that's either easier, or (more likely) at least interesting enough to be worth the extra difficulty. :) [/edit]
Been looking through all the pages of this thread and noticed something, I posted Ultravox Vienna twice :booboo:, page 5 and page 11, so in six months time...
Here's another one of my favourites, American band well known in the UK.
Water dissolving...and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Carry the water at the bottom of the ocean
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down.
Easy peasy. Talking Heads, Once in a lifetime.
This band is definitely 'Brit Pop' but I'm sure they made it over the pond.
And all I wanna hear is the message beep.
My dreams, they've got to kiss, because I don't get sleep, no..
Well, I couldn't answer that one without cheating, so I will only submit that I've never heard of the group. :(

Windmill, Windmill for the land.
Turn forever hand in hand.
Are the next lines. There was I thinking this one would be easy.
Well, you said "no cheating", and I can't post an answer without doing so (I peeked), so...
Still no takers. Googling is now allowed
Band: Gorrillaz
Title: Feel Good Inc.
This is a good indication that I need to expand my musical acumen. :)
A quick question:
Are "cover songs" allowed? or how about lyric re-writes?
Firstly you should have posted the video to the song, Dave, tut tut ;D
I think that's half the point of this thread, the videos, which reminds me, when its my turn I make sure I pick a song that I can find a video of, on YouTube.
Wont a cover be the same lyrics? In which case there might be 2 correct answers, that sounds ok to me, more chance of getting it right. ;)
Im not sure what you mean by lyric re-writes, but its your go, so hit us with a hit 8)
My bad. That's what I get for using the "Quick Reply" space, below. Just too lazy for my own good, sometimes. :( I shall endeavor to improve.
Ok, here's what I mean by a "lyric re-write (think Weird AL here, in general, but not specifically)
Now over at the temple
Oh! They really pack 'em in
The in crowd say it's cool
To dig this chanting thing
I tried to make that one fairly easy.
I think I have heard the first two lines of the song, but... <insert scratch head here /> :scratch-head:
Still thinking, it might come to me.
Took a bit of head scratching this one, but I finally got it and I swear I didn't cheat.
The Clash, Rock the Casbah.
Like Data, I'm not quite sure what "lyric re-write" means. I thought it pertained to a song where the lyrics had been changed such as Elton Johns' Candle in the Wind. Would this be correct Dave?. :scratch-head:
I've had a bit of a think about my next one and have decided to move back to the 70's.
I could stay home every night
Wait around for Mister Right.
Depending on your age, but I think this is fairly easy. :D
No cheating now!!!.
@Diesel: Right song, wrong lyrics and wrong artist. Close, though. For the artist, think courageous monarch and English fromage.
[edit]Oh, CRAP! I copied the wrong verse, and that one is identical to the original! ACK! :o
Please disregard my post as clearly I got it wrong(ish). Courageous Monarch and English Fromage?. :scratch-head:
Arthur Cheddar, doesn't ring any bell's with me. :D
Think crusades, not Round Table, and translation, not type. And I just looked over the 2 websites that listed the lyrics I was researching, and the only difference there actually is is the chorus (the verses were out of order, and I must not have been paying attention). So my bad. I'll do better next time. :)

Interestingly enough, I'm finding two versions of the lyrics for the Clash, too, that indicate different choruses. Stranger and stranger.
Diesel, I'm going to call that a "win" for you, since I messed up. But here's the song I was looking for:
What ever. This is just a bit of fun really so who cares. ;D May I reinstate my earlier post?. :P
By all means. :)
I liked that version Dave posted, never heard it before, gets ya tapping ya toes, and the Clash version, always a classic.

This actually harp's back to a time when the Female Dictator and I first got together. If I knew then what I know now. :'( However, it is our Pearl Wedding Anniversary this year, so, to be honest, it's not all that bad and I have permission to say that.
Movie: Grease
Song: There are Worse Things I Could Do
Artist: Stockard Channing
I didn't need to google this one. I love this movie! :)
[edit] I just noticed that the splash for the video even carries the second stanza. How cool is that? [/edit]
Are we waiting on a new song? Because if so, I'm still waiting on confirmation. :P
Or am I just being slightly impatient?
Go ahead. It looked right to me.
This one should be fairly easy, depending on how popular MTV was, back in 1979, there in the UK:
They took the credit for your second symphony.
Rewritten by machine and new technology,
and now I understand the problems you can see.
I know this one, no cheat needed, yes fairly easy, and a classic :)
Buggles - Video killed the radio starWill think of another soon.
Yup! Score one for Data! :D
Interestingly, this was the very first music video aired on MTV, which made it's debut on August 1st, 1981 (funny, I had thought it had first aired in 1979. Silly Dave!)
I've found a few places that list the lyrics for one hit wonders, so be warned! They're gonna get harder. :P
Incidentally, Data, that video is a later re-make. Below is the original, with a link to the actual MTV debut below it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw6xesXLIAA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw6xesXLIAA)
Awww I would have got that one. Great song.
Here's a classic:
Some may say
I'm wishing my days away
No way
Tomorrow's another day.
Great song about being stoned, apparently.
The Police, Walking on the Moon. Found this live version.
Well done, Snowy! :)
That one was just itching the back of my brain, but I couldn't quite bring up the song from memory. Maybe too much "walking on the moon"? :P
This is an American artist/band I do believe.
Hey you, are you trying to be mean?
If you live with apes man, it's hard to be clean.
I'm not sure if this is right but could it be Hey You by The Scorpions?. :scratch-head:

Another random line from the song is...
It's all relative to the size of your steeple.
And no diesel, it's not The Scorpions.
Well Snowcrash this has been giving me the severe Bo@*$%k ache, so I must admit , I have cheated big time. What a surprise, I haven't even looked at this since my Son was easily controllable and the British Bulldog was doing his thing with the Ultimate Warrior.
I think it's, Marylin Manson, Beautiful People which was used for the Theme for one of the Smackdown's.
Is this correct?.
If it is, I think you should have picked another line from the lyrics, something about, Getting a Whiff of something Unsavoury On your Leg. :P
Yes, you have it right.
And here's the clean version of the video. Your's has 2 rude words.
Well I never did.
Ok, here's a little Ballad for you:-
I'll protect you from the hooded claw,
Keep the Vampires from your door.
Christmas release back in 198-, yeah right, no cheating now (unlike me ::)).
I didn't know Snowy's one at all but...
Diesel's one has to be:
Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love
I would've done 2 tribes. Definitely not my favorite Frankie song.
Well done Data, I wouldn't have got it on those lyrics.
Lets wind the clock back, just a little.
You better beware, you better take care
You better watch out if you've got long black hair
Is this anything to do with 'Albert says that E=MC²'
Sounds similar but I think not.
Again that ² key comes in handy. BTW, it's next to the µ key. :P
The only "extra keys" I know about are ©, £ and ¿ Go figure! :)
Nice nostalgic pick there Data. Early 70's, Saturday morning's down the Top Rank Suite having Block Buster by the Sweet belted into your ears. Happy Day's. :D
Check out those Barnet's and shoes. I used to have both. :-[ :sign-oops:
Well done.
You glam rocker you Diesel ;D
I was only six at the time but I remember it well.
If I tried to have hair like that now there would be a lovely bald patch.
hmm, don't think it would look quite the same
Think it must be my turn again. Back to the 80's here. No cheating now. :-*
Promises, promises turn to dust
Wedding bells just turn to rust.
Oh I remember that, took me a minute... is it The Beautiful South and I need a little time or perhaps just Need a little time....
Are you referring to this one, Freddy?
Pretty song, if a bit sad. Also reminded me of some of the "intense discussions" I'd had with a girlfriend, back in the 90's. Kitchen looked somewhat the same, knives in the wall included. :o
Not my favorite Beautiful South song, I prefer 'Perfect 10'; more saucy.
And technically bells are made of brass so they could never rust.
I make that your go Freddy.

Forgot I am next on this too :o
Around Nassau town we did roam
Drinking all night
Got into a fight
Well I feel so broke up
I knew this straight away. Good choice. 1960's, The Beach Boys, Sloop John B. I've often used the lyric, "Oh wont you let me go home", after a tough day at work. :(
After a bit of searching, I've found a Vid that's not stuffed full of Ads.
Well done Diesel
Whilst playing I found this version by Simple Minds and a rather interesting Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_John_B._Sails).
Interesting, I always wondered about the lyrics. I really didn't like the Simple Minds version though, it's not really something you want to sing along to is it. lol
These days I prefer the BBs over the Beatles.
Oi Diesel you slacker. Where's the next post? :o
You can't give us 'I can't play my vynal' excuses now 'cos I know your amp is working fine. ;D
Easy Tiger. I've been busy listening to my Vynal. If my Amp wasn't fixed I would have more time to concentrate on this.
You better hope and pray,
That you make it safe,
Back to your own world.
Enjoy.
It's Shakespeare's Sister....and ummmm....I can't remember the title at the moment. Ohh just came to me...Stay or possibly Stay with Me.
Well done. And here's the video...
That was a powerful (if disturbing) video. I was all set to choke up and start having to dab my eyes...
Then that scary... I don't even want to describe her, lest she notices me somehow...

LOL, we have quite a lot of Goths over here, eventually you get used to them and the shock factor is reduced, eventually ;)
I'm rather accustomed to the Yank version of Goth, but that... That... Thing's mouth struck me as a combination of Audry 2 (Little Shop of Horrors) and a T-Rex. And then to extend a tongue (at least I assume that's what it was) long enough to span the light-years that separated the teeth jutting from that gaping, cavernous maw!!!
Drat. New underwear needed again! :o
Typical women. The guy can't even die in peace. :-X
Have I said too much again :o
If you think that's rough Dave, you should see her brother these day's.
I'm quite content (?) to only be as horribly scarred as I currently am, thank you. :P
OK here's one for ya, just two lines...
I can't sleep and I lay and I think
The night is hot and black as ink
I have googled these lines and I know the band but have never heard of this song.
Anyone else got any ideas? I'll leave it to Freddy to say when googling is allowed.
Hehe surprised you have not heard the song as it is one of their best.
OK looks like it is one for Google then
'Love Reign O'er Me' by The Who from Quadraphenia. The only album of theirs I got into was Tommy.
Also found this version by Pearl Jam.
I'm going for the saucy lyrics with...
Put your dirty angel face,
Between my legs and knicker lace.
This one is aptly from the naughties and has a cool video.
GOLDFRAPP Twist
I confess to liking Goldfrapp, the grunty sound of their synths does it for me 8)
Found a live version of the song
I've tried 3 Goldfrapp albums but 'Black Cherry' is the only one I really like. This is a track off of that album.
The video of the song is good too, so here is is.
How about this one:
She's posing for consumer products now and then
I should have got this sooner. DOH.
Early 80's, fantastic Electronic music. It is, of course, Kraftwerk The Model.
Back then, when I was a D.J., this wonderful Electronic stuff gave me an opportunity to really "go to town" with the Sound To Light systems of the day. Top draw pick Data, well done.
Right, I've had a bit of a think, here's a good fun little ditty from the 70's.
I was so upset that I cried all the way to the chip shop.
Hehe, Jilted John !
'Gooordon is a moron' was my favourite line lol.
Bit of a classic that, with an acquired taste.
Poor old Gordon :'(
Here we go, 2, 3, 4
I don't belive I didn't get one of those.
Electronic and punk music, my favs.
That's you again Freddy.
OK, just two lines again :
Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place
Next lines :
And if I'd stare too long
I'd probably break down and cry
Got it on the 2nd lot of lyrics.
Guns 'n' Roses, Sweet child o' mine.
Ok. I seem to have more of a crossover of music to Diesel than Freddy but I bet both of you to easily get this one. Not sure about Data.
Bye, bye baby, its been a sweet love.
Though this feeling I can't change
Well done  Not sure about this one though...hmmmm
I know this one. I'm wracking my brain for the artist, but I know the title. Gimme a minute.
No, I'm NOT using any outside help here, other than maybe some Ginseng. :)
Crap! I can't remember! DRAT DRAT DRAT! Maybe it's Crea... No, that's not it. Oh, WAIT! Lynard Skynard! Freebird! Video in a jif! :)
I like this video best, of all the ones I've found.
One of the best videos I've seen so far in the thread, stayed with it to the end, all 10 minutes of it. :shades:
:D I like that Dave enjoyed that so much, I get excited too when I get one lol.
Would never have got that one though, but I did listen to the song all the way through too, not really my thing but not bad either.
Ok, here we go.
The darkness must go
Down the river of night's dreaming
Ah yes, one of the less popular numbers from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. This one is There's A light Over At Frankensteins Place. Over here Dave, the favourite number is Time Warp, which we can all dance to provided sufficient libation has been taken. ;)
Simply couldn't find a video, this will have to do for now unless anyone knows better. :D
Well done, diesel! And I chose that song because of it's (lack of) popularity, not in spite of it. :) You're up. :D
Fairly easy this, so no cheating. :innocent:
I'd build a big tall house
With rooms by the dozen.
Trust me, if Snowcrash think's my musical prowess is somewhat eclectic, he's just gunna' love this. :P
An obscure Rocky Horror song by Janet if memory serves. And now a song Diesel says is easy.
I have cheated, so I wont give it away but easy? I do know the song but not from these lyrics. Takes me back to my school daze. (sic)
As Dave had hit the Musical's, I thought I would continue the theme, also it seemed appropriate. ;D
Next line then.
Right in the middle of the town.
Even with
A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below.
There would be one long staircase just going up,
And one even longer coming down,
And one more leading nowhere, just for show.
I don't think I'd get it. But then I'm not a musical fan.
If I were a rich man, Fiddler on the roof.
I'm giving up with musicals. I'm going for modern (well 5 years old) and this...
Tonight make me unstoppable.
And I will charm, I will slice, I will dazzle them with my wit.
It's another English band/artist. Sorry Dave but it's all I know :sign-evil-laugh:
Not sure if this is correct, but I'm informed by the youngest LEECH that lives here that you are looking for, Bloc Party, The Prayer?. Never heard of the band let alone the song!!!. Interesting effects on the Vid though.
The Prayer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8oRFcA0mFM#)
You, or rather your LEECH, are correct.
Not sure if I'm feeling contemporary or old now. :-\
Forgotten about the video, very trippy.
Here we are then.
What made me behave that way
Using words I'd never say.
Back to the Naughties for this one.
Or Noughties or Nowt's or Not A Lot ies, either way, the '00.
Any takers, somebody, anybody. Cracking tune this one.
Ok, cheat if you must. ;)
Ok I cheated :no-no:
Must admit I didnt know that one :worship:

Spot on. Well cheated my friend. Bit of a toughy that. :yahoo: :hats-off:
Here's a nice little number for you all.
These games you play, they're gonna end in more than tears someday
Oh yes, back to my period of music.
This song has a very significant Historical meaning, given the name of the song and if you don't believe me, look it up.
O.M.D., Enola Gay.

Yup, well done Diesel

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Enola Gay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5XJ2GiR6Bo#)
The plane that drop THE bombs yes ?
It's the plane (B29) that dropped the first bomb. 'Bockscar' was the second.
Not completely sure, but I think it could be my go again. If it is, great, if not, what ever.
Here are some lyrics that an Incomplete Idiot can relate too.
Like the clock who's hand's are sweeping past the minutes of it's face.
Original version only please, as many cover version's just simply aren't as good. :)
I think I've got this one:
Dusty Springfield - The Windmills Of Your Mind
I will leave the video for you to post Diesel, not sure if I can find the original.
Well done Data, right song, however not the original artist. There have been many cover versions, hence I requested the original artist just to make things more interesting. Whether this version is the best or most memorable, is clearly open to debate and/or personal taste.
The Windmills of Your Mind - Noel Harrison (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEhS9Y9HYjU#)
Nice song, if a bit before my time but still a classic, I had no idea who did the original but had a feeling I would probably post the wrong one :D
Think out of the versions I heard on Youtube the Noel Harrison original one is my favourite.
On with another:

After a quick counting up on the fingers it would seem not :mutley:
I know this is David Bowie, but which one, can't remember, oh oh,must sit on hands, gunna' bust something vital, please sort this out Freddy, starting to hurt bad, mustn't Google. :-\
Finally, got it. All systems returning to normal, heart rate, blood pressure, respiration you name it. CD collection not get tidied though, just waiting for my Directive.
Of all the Vids available, I thought this to be the best given that it appears to chronicle Ziggy Stardust transition to David Bowie.
David Bowie - Sound and Vision (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRc2_-BCljQ#)
Bowie, one of my all time favourite artists, has produced some brilliant stuff over the years and very little or no dross in my opinion.
Just to be very, very cheeky, I've snuck this Vid in as well, lesser known song, but one of my early Bowie favourites.
David Bowie , The laughing Gnome (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvI0R6dOb0Q#)
Haha, I think I might have got that one as I was pretty big on the thin white duke myself. Great song btw :)
Thanks for putting The Laughing Gnome in there, was great to hear that one again.
Im a bit of a fan of Bowie, don't have much of his music on my PC, might have to change that.
Time for a new one me thinks :scratch-head:
Yeah it is Freddy.
The problem is Diesel is away, and I think its his go.
We might have to hold on.
No that wasn't a lyric ;D
Sorry for the delay, Hols got in the way. Thought this might be appropriate.
If the Boys Want To Fight
You Better Let Them
Can't remember if this group has been posted before though, as for looking all the way back through, CBA. ;D
Thin Lizzy: The Boys are Back (in Town?)
Thin Lizzy - 'The Boys Are Back In Town' - Live (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8UoUXmKH_A#)

I never had any Thin Lizzy records, odd really because I did like them.
Yeah fitting song Diesel.

Should be dead simple. At least I hope it is. :D
Sounds familiar but can't place it with that line.
Next line please or I'll have to google ???
The next line is the chorus, and a dead giveaway. How about the line before? :)

Me too, I cant get this one :scratch-head:
Ok, so maybe this is a "Yank" thing.
Here's the first part of the chorus:
I say, we can dance, we can dance. Everything's out of control
We can dance, we can dance. We're doing it from pole to pole.
No not a "Yank" thing Dave we were just being imbeciles :breakdance:
I soon as I read the chorus I got it straight away.
Good song too.
Safety Dance - Men Without Hats Official Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjPau5QYtYs#)
I remember this song. Just didn't get it from the first two lines.
Easy with the chorus. Good pick.
Though I do also remember singing 'big in ya pants' to this song.
I remember when that song first came out on MTV, I was going around the house, driving the wife nuts and making my son laugh, doing that thing they did with their arms. Ah, good times. :D
That be your go den Data.
:worship:
Hehe
Ok then here's one.
I know this one quite well but I have a feeling it could be tricky, though it is a well-known song, I have given plenty of the lyrics to help.
There was a lot of rocking going on that night
Cruising time for the young, bright lights
Just down past the gasworks, by the meat factory door
The five lamp boys were coming on strong
Data my man, way to easy. What's that about Vermin Extermination?. ;)
Doh!
Didn't want to make it too hard or too easy, there must be a balance in there somewhere :scratch-head:
Next time I try harder :)

Repeat the chant 'meme' melody,
The light of 'phare' Alexandria,

Now to google, Doh! Them rules they hurt when it's not your first language.
Yes, not easy for non-French people. This singer was a big idol here, but unknown outside.
Just a little help: the name of the city (in the lyrics) is in the title. Good luck! ;D
Well it looks like no one is going to get this song.
GT can we Google now?
Of course, Data. ;)
Google translate...
The sirens of the port of Alexandria,
Still singing the same melody,
Light from the Lighthouse of Alexandria,
Wrecked the butterflies of my youth. (this must be a French statement)
Claude Francois - Alexandrie Alexandra (paroles) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqGKs2gyTqI#)
Well done Snowy
Somehow I think GT might have been expecting a video of the singer performing the song.
So for GT's eyes only ;)
Claude FRANCOIS " alexandrie - alexandra ..... " (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBF-LH0hLaQ#)
Was that Vid from a Holiday Camp ?.
Nice pick GT40, I wonder why he never caught on over here. :scratch-head:
Congratulations, Snowcrash. And thanks for the video, Data. Yes Diesel, he was ready to conquer the world when he died in a stupid accident (electrocution) in 1978. Something like a national catastrophe...
He was very intelligent: men didn't like the singer, but at least, they were in love with the dancers. ;)
Thanks GT40. I could never have got it without google's help.
Back to the 80s for this one I think.
I've got your picture, of me and you
You wrote "I love you", I wrote "me too"
I am being fairly obscure with the lyrics as I expect everyone to get it on the chorus.
A little easy this one for me, dates back to the early 80's, Turning Japanese by The Vapors
The Vapors Turning Japanese totp2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWAwrMFtSvM#)
Top draw pick Snowcrash. ;D
Thought that one might have lated more than 1/2 an hour.
Oh well. What treats do you have for us Diesel?
Way back to the seventies here.
Four and Twenty Black Birds sing along
Royal Gifts they all will bring.
Given that this was one Hell of a long time ago, these two lines are from the chorus.
Good hunting. :P

Hmm Im sure I know these lyrics, they ring a bell, but can't pull it from my brain.
Not giving up yet though.
That's not even ringing a bell from the next village over, I'm afraid. Well, unless you count old nursery rhymes. :)
I've just googled it and I'm none the wiser.
Not heard of the band or the song. It's from 1971 so I was 4 and it must've gone under my radar. Not that I knew what radar was when I was 4.
Where did you drag this one up from, Diesel?
In the words of that great Sage, Forrest Gump, "Life's like a box of Chocolates, you just don't know what your gunna' git next".
What still no Vid, oh well.
The reason I picked this one?.
Several years ago, I was on holiday at a nice place in Devon, The English Riviera ?, yeah right. Anyway, one of the entertainers, whom was a bit of a fruit cake, announced he was in fact the lead singer from the 70's group White Plains. Who ?, I thought, but once he sang their songs, I thought, Ah yes. So whenever I hear this little number, it takes me back to that Holiday (vacation for the Yanks, nothing personal Yanks). That's all it is.
White Plains - When You Are A King (1971) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGefH1YWJfU#)
Another one up for Snowcrash I believe as you did your Homework. (C+, well done)
Was hoping someone else may jump in.
Oh, well. Here goes...
I'm not numbed out anymore,
No longer filled with hate and pain.
No longer trenched in shame,
This is a real song, not a confession :o
**edited 2 "I'm" s out.
You'll all remember this song when it comes to the video. I hope. ???
Next lines are ...
I'm not numbed out anymore,
Now I own the key to the door.
You'll also recognise the backing singer.
I did know this one before the second clue but left it to see if anyone else could get it.
It would seem not.
Jah Wobble & Sinead O'Connor - Visions of You
Excelent track, unfortunatly not many quality vids of it on YouTube
Jah Wobble & Sinead O'Connor - Visions of You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89EtGjU0qgU#)
That is the first time I have ever heard that song and I love it, nice one Snowcrash.
REALLY!
It's from 1991 and it's one of those songs that make the hairs on my neck stand on end.
Jah Wobble was the basist for Public Image Ltd and then went solo. And lost it judging by some of the music. :-X
These are his releases (http://www.30hertzrecords.com/releases/), there's several pages.
Nice song, very distinctive bass player.
First I've heard the song, as well. Of course, that's not surprising, being the "Token Yank". :)
Ok, sue me for resurrecting a long dormant thread. :P
Listen my brothers and sisters,
Come hear my desperate tale.
I speak of our friends of nature,
trapped in the dirt like a jail.
Have fun and good luck. This one's a bit "off the beaten path". :D
I've looked at this 3 times. I know that I know this song, it's some kind of hippy tune or something like that but I can't put my finger on it.
As a hint, I've played the song in Random Music Videos at one point. :D
I've found it, it was your first post in Random Music vids Dave.

Here's one of my all time favorites:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmK0bZl4ILM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmK0bZl4ILM)
Wow! My first post? I hadn't noticed. :D
Well done, Data! I promise not to be so obscure next time (the time after that? We'll see... ;) )
This was a great thread I am bringing back five years later ;D
Can you work out the song and band from these lines ?
They put a hot wire to my head
'Cause of the things I did and said
They made these feelings go away
Model citizen in every way
I used to love this thread, actually. I'm grateful that you brought it back. :)
I don't have a proper guess right now. The lyrics sound sooooo familiar, but nothing comes to mind, and I'm not ready to Google it yet. Lemme think on it a bit, and see if something shakes the dust off my RAM.
Sure thing Dave. I reckon if Data sees it he might beat you.
Ended up having to Google it, and I'm sure that I've never heard the song before, let alone the performer. I won't give it away, since I essentially cheated, but if everyone else has to cheat, then I win because I reported first. :P :D
Kidding, of course. ;)
This was a great thread, I agree :)
I could be wrong or I could be right, no actually I'm 100% sure about this one and I will Rise to the occasion. It also gives me a chance to post my favourite PIL song.
Thanks Freddy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBHrfgCDWog
Yes, that's what I found as well, though a different video. Not sure I like it all that much, but it's not a bad song, really. It's just my cup of tea. :)
I forgot about this thread. Continuation of the PIL / John Lydon theme then.
How about...
No one can sing
Quite like Smokey, Smokey Robinson
Wailin' and skankin' to Bob Marley
Reggae's expanding with Sly and Robbie
Well done Data, I thought that you would get it.
@Dave, no he's not everyone's cup of tea to be fair.
@Snowy, that's a tough one, hmm :scratch-head:
Took me a little while but I got there Snowy
Tom Tom Club - Genius of Love
Found this live video of them done 4 years ago, seems like they are still going, really like Tom Tom Club 8)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VL94XuyW0w
Well done Data, I would never have got that.
Winner does the next one I think it was, take it away :)
OK try this, shouldn't be too hard:
You keep me running round and round,
Well that's alright with me,
Up and down, I'm up the wall,
I'm up the bloody tree.
EDIT:
This is just some lyrics, it is absolutely not how I feel about any of our members, just incase anyone thought it was.
Easy peasy. Hardest part was spelling Blancmange.
A Live version of Living on the Ceiling.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TtG4bBQeJc
Well done Snowy, that was another one I would not have got in a month of Sundays !
I did know the song though when I heard it.
Here's once since I had it ready.
People always told me be careful of what you do
And don't go around breaking young girls' hearts
And mother always told me be careful of who you love
And be careful of what you do 'cause the lie becomes the truth
I got it, very easy that one Freddy, lets see if anyone else can get it, if not I will post another set of Lyrics.
lol Good one, Freddy! Michael Jackson's Billie Jean, FTW! :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lvsBBNV-U4
Well done both
Dave or Data take it away for the next one :)
I'm going to defer this to Data, as I still don't have a challenge to share. All yours, oh Leaf-shirted one! :P :D
Leaf-shirted one here ;)
Ok try this one, it's very short but unique as well I think.
"And then we'll take it higher"
Hint, think of what the Leaf-shirted one likes ;D
Well I am stuck. It got into my head so much I had to Google, so I am out
lol I was listening to a randomized playlist in Winamp while I was coding just a moment ago, when I was taken aback by the song that was playing. It was Eddy Grant performing "Electric Avenue". then I got the email notification for Freddy's post, which reminded me of the current challenge here! :D How random was that??? :D
I'll need a couple of moments to get something together, I think. Perhaps a movie theme? Hmmm.
Serendipity in action :D
Our lives are full of strange happenings ;)
I will post the song cos I like it :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UG8_f0HdlMQ
Ok, I think I have a fun one here. As hinted at, it's a movie theme song.
Quote
When outlaws ruled the west, and fear filled the land
A cry went up for a man with guts, to take the West in hand.
Hmm a Zorro movie perhaps ?
That's a good guess, Freddy, but no. :)
Here's a second hint. There were a number of people in Hollywood named Mel, but only two were supremely famous. The song is related to one of those men. but I'm not saying which. :D
I feel like I should know this.
Dave is it a comedy film ?
You should know this, Data; and yes, it's a comedy.
Blazing saddles ?
I've seen it many times, a classic but I'm not sure it is the film in question.
Yes I was thinking that - Mel Brooks, but I can't name the song. :scratch-head:
Data, you are, indeed, correct. It's Blazing Saddles. And Freddy, the name of the theme song is the name of the movies. Enjoy!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-HRbsejTyw
:D One of the funniest films ever made.
And one that could never be made today, with all of our idiocy about "political correctness". :(
Think I got that then :D
Here is one from Mrs Data:
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half-forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream
Those are lovely lyrics. I have no clue. :)
It seems familiar but I can't name it.
Can I ask - is it from the 80s ?
It's from the late 60's and has been covered a few times now.
I promise you all know it :)
clue: I've been talking about these objects quite a lot recently.
Oh is it something like "Windmills of your mind" ?
Yeah you got it Freddy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfrcBQU8oh0
Cool, I'll come up with another one for tomorrow :D
OK probably easy, dunno...
QuoteI guess I should of closed my eyes
When you drove me to the place
Where your horses run free
Easy peasy! Prince, Little Red Corvette!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0KpfrJE4zw
{rocking out!}
Well done Dave, one of my favourite Prince songs that one
It was one of my favorites at the time, certainly. It's funny, because I recognised it in less than 5 seconds, but the only reason it dawned on me that that was the song was because before I had actually read the words, my subconscious grabbed the words and started playing the song in my head. It was all very surreal because I saw the post, began to read, then heard the song immediately. I wondered why that song was playing when the rest of my brain caught up and the metaphoric light lit. :D
I'll try to think of a good one. Stay tuned!
Oops? I had forgotten it was my turn again. Silly me! I don't know whether this will be a challenge or not, but here it is:
Quote
Once we were standing still in time,
Chasing the fantasies that filled our minds.
the song is rather old, but there have been some covers that were also popular, so there's that. :)
Oh, and bonus points if you can tell me the movie it came from. :P
Racking my brains but I'm struggling with this one.
I am stuck too. :scratch-head:
Would it help to know the artists who performed it?
Would a couple more lines give it away ?
Probably, but it's worth a try.
Quote
And you knew how I loved you but my spirit was free,
Laughing at the questions that you once asked of me.
Nope still don't know it
Ok, final hint: There were three female artists who performed the song. They were:
1.) Thelma Houston
2.) Diana Ross
3.) Mariah Carey
I honestly didn't think this would be that difficult. :-\ :)
This one was bugging me, I cracked and Googled it :@-computer:
No points for me :(
Should have known it, it's a nice little tune that I find myself singing to from time to time.
Theme from the film Mahogany.
Do you know where you're going to ? Original Thelma Houston
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_n9KfgjjbU
You are, Sir, quite correct. It was a bit more of a challenge than I had thought it would be, so my bad, but it's a lovely song. I'll try to present something easier on my next turn.
I would not have got that despite knowing the song.
Sorry for that, Freddy. With as popular as Diana Ross was, back in the day, I reckoned that this would only be a moderate challenge. Well, live and learn, I guess. :)
I'm not complaining, no need to say sorry, it's all part of the game ;D
I have a question and I'm hoping that someone can come up with an answer. Music and singers have gone through a lot of changes over the years, there was a time when people playing instruments could make the instrument sound like it was talking, like a voice coming from the instrument. I became interested in this and remember it well but I can't come up with a record title that demonstrates this. Can anyone come up with a song that demonstrates this.
Carl2
Do you mean talk boxes ?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnR19INlXV8
Actually, Jimi Hendrix was able to make sounds very close to Human speech with nothing but his guitar (and a "fuzz box", of course). I'll see what I can find, because I can't remember the specific songs.
Here we go:
http://www.slate.com/blogs/lexicon_valley/2013/12/12/jimi_hendrix_rock_guitarists_make_their_insturment_sound_like_a_human_voice.html
I couldn't find anything, long time ago. Gave me a chance to listen to some older music that I liked quite a bit.
Carl2
Here's one :
QuoteA man walks down the street
It's a street in a strange world
Maybe it's the Third World
Maybe it's his first time around
Ooh! another easy one! But I'm going to hold off, except to hint at the artist, and hint at the video:
"troubled waters" more diminutive half.
SNL car make danced.
You got it
Well, the idea was to let someone else have a go, so as not to dominate or have too many turns, so I'll still hold off for a wee bit longer. :)
Took me a little while but it came to me this morning.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uq-gYOrU8bA
Ok I've got one:
QuoteWell I gave him roasted toadstools,
And a glass of dandelion wine.
Then I put him on a train to Eastbourne.
Carried his bag, and gave him a fag.
Simon & Garfunkel one of my favorites, I hope no one minds but I have to include this song by them.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAEppFUWLfc
Carl2
I don't mind you posting one of your favorite songs Carl, it's a good tune after all :)
Has anyone got my last set of lyrics yet ?
Need a clue ?
No idea from what you posted so far, I did go and look through the music videos for some lyrics to post but haven't done that yet, nice game someone came up with.
Carl2
The only thing that comes to mind is maybe something by the Waterboys.

All I get in my mind is something about trains and cigs. If I had to guess, I'd say late 60's, early 70's, but that's just a vague impression, and nothing solid. I rather pride myself on having a rather eclectic and wide ranging knowledge about music, but I know that I've only ever heard a bare smattering of what's out there. :)
Dave you are close, late 60's iconic British artist, I'm sure everyone here knows the tune.
It doesn't seem like anyone is going to get this one, which surprises me.
Oh well, I heard it on the radio a few days ago and it took me back to my early childhood.
Just a bit of fun.
The Laughing Gnome | David Bowie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-jLTkais7s
Sorry, mate. That song doesn't seem to have made it over the pond, as I've never heard it before. From the sound of it, this is a song I would have latched onto in my younger days. :)
I remember David Bowie but don't recall hearing that song.
Carl2
I knew the song, but it's such a Godawful song I think I could only bear to listen to part of it
Here's one, just two lines to start...
QuoteNo, I can't bear to live my life alone
I grow impatient for a love to call my own
I know this one, but it seems I've misplaced the memory. Let me wrack the brain a little, and see what shakes loose. :)
Think I know it.
Phil Collins, you can't hurry love ?
Well done Data. :D
Of course, before Phil there were The Supremes who sang it too. Here's Phil though as I like his version :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ao9SIKC48vg
I was drawn more to the older version of the song, actually, but I just wasn't there yet. Well done, Data.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ7uXX9K7Sk
Yes the Supremes were a class act, very much something I grew up with as M&D used to play their songs 8)
I had forgotten that Phil Collins version was a cover, listened to both, I like the gentleness of the original better, I think.
Ok this is a test, has anyone listened to the lyrics of one of the songs I posted in random music vids :D
QuoteYou were the shadow to my light
Did you feel us
Another start
You fade away
Afraid our aim is out of sight
Wanna see us
Alive
Since I always liked Phil I'd have to say I like both versions of the song about equally well. I found it interesting both dressed like the were dressing for a show rather than wearing ripped jeans.
No Idea what Data is referring to.
Carl2
Oh well everyone failed the test
Actually I posted these lyrics to give me a reason to post a live version of the song I found.
I may be getting older but I still like a lot of modern music.
Alan Walker - Faded Live (well the singing is :) )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGU3FD4bCP4
Yeah I wouldn't have got that, but I do listen to all the songs in the music thread - you can still find good modern music I agree
Good singer with a good voice but I think her voice got lost mixing with the music, I wish I was at the mixer and could add more to bring her voice out. Oh well.
I came across a jazz station where I heard Billy Holiday, from 1920 and 30's, I still like her voice, it seems horns are no longer used in music today. We did have some really great singers and musicians now lost.

I like Billie Holiday Carl, and Blue Moon is a very evocative song no matter who seems to sing it.
Going again with my theme of old and new.
QuoteI find it hard to realize
That love was in her eyes
It's dying now
She knows I'm crying now
I know this, just can't quite pull the answer from my brain yet.
I'm in the same boat, Data. I know the song, but can't quite pull it up. :scratch-head:
Okay, well done for not Googling.
I don't want you both to suffer eternal punishment in hell though.
Couple more lines...
QuoteI find it hard to realize
That love was in her eyes
It's dying now
She knows I'm crying now
And every night I'm there
I break my heart to please
Still working on it :scratch-head:
Hellishly difficult is it ?
That sounded vaguely like a hint. :P
Yes second hint, one above too in italics :D
I've worked this out at last with some help from Mrs Data also these lines kept going round my head:
Quote
And every night I'm there
I break my heart to please
Eloise :yahoo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKxNGtaEJ4k
Haha well done the two of you
Try this one, I've only posted a couple of lines, if I post the next 2 I think it might be a massive giveaway.
QuoteStaightenin' the curves
Flattenin' the hills
Data, Data, Data. You know what a petrol-head I am. This was FAR too easy. :D
But here's a version of the song that I'll bet you've never seen before:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2kpyA4uLzg
Well done Dave, I thought you might get it :)
You're right too, I haven't heard that version before
That was quick
It's actually them singing too 8)
The good Ole boys the words seem so familiar but I couldn't remember where it was from. Anyways that brought me to listening to some of Queens music, Lot of unique things in there music.
Carl2
New one !
QuoteOn a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
Thanks, Freddy. I wasn't really in a place to add one.
Hmm, not ringing any bells yet :scratch-head:
It might be a difficult one, here's it with two more lines :
QuoteOn a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
Contemplating a crime
Is is... Possibly... the Year of the Cat?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqZc7ZQURMs
BTW, the most recent "year of the cat" was 2011. The next one is 2023
Very good Dave, I remember the words but couldn't connect it to a song.
Carl2
Yes indeed, well done Dave
I thought it might be you that got that one, but I was standing by with various cat based clues just in case.
I'll do my best to post something here by morning. I'll try to make sure it's something that everyone here has a chance to get, so pond-crossover, early 70's to mid-90's, I'm thinking? AFoS comes to mind, but that's fairly obscure on this side. Have to think on it. :)
Yeah I was trying to pick mine like that. Could go back to the 60s too...
I would never have got that one, I don't know the song.
Well done Dave
Here's a song that I woke up with stuck in my head:
Quote
I can't lie.
I can't tell you that I'm something I'm not
No matter how I try
I'll never be able to give you something
Something that I just haven't gpt
Can't place this one :scratch-head:
Might need a clue, I'm not getting this one either.
ok, here are a brace of them:
1. the artist is also a "comfort food"
2. there's only one degree of separation (or is it zero?) between the artist and both Susan Sarandon and Tim Curry
3. (bonus hint) in the states, the title of the song is a popular saying of consolation for "almost" success.
Something by Meatloaf ?
got the artist, now for the song. :)
how about a few more lines?
Quote
Baby we could talk all night,
But that ain't gettin' us nowhere.
These are both the first and last lines in the song.
BTW, it's been somewhat challenging for me to find out just how popular (or not) some American songs were/are, over in the UK, so if I pick songs you've not heard of, my bad.
[edit]
lol while researching just this, I ran across the following:
QuoteYes, we like the well-known American bands like the Beatles...
Made me chuckle, and had to share. :D
[/edit]
Meatloaf is very well known and liked over here on the whole, been having hits here since I was young.
Not sure if I know this song though - the name I got from the link to The Rocky Horror Picture Show and then the food treat popped into place.
Hmm... thunking. I feel I know it. Not Bat out of Hell, Dead Ringer, I Would do Anything.... hmmm
And yes those good old boys the Beatles did pretty good over here - thanks
Ahh !
Just popped in - Two Outta Three Aint Bad ?
The title is something like that I think.
DING!!! Well done, Freddy! I reckon that was a tough one.
;D Thanks !
Yes that had me thinking.
Okay here's a new one. And old classic :
QuoteAhh you've gone to the finest schools, alright Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
I remember the words but can not think of the name of the song, I really fail at this.
Carl2
Time for a cryptic hint :
Mick Jagger ? Kind of...
I haven't got a clue on this one :(
Yes you have I just gave you one  ;)
The opening verses will likely give it away.
QuoteOnce upon a time you dressed so fine
Threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People call say 'beware doll, you're bound to fall'
You thought they were all kidding you
No bells ringing here, either, I'm afraid. :scratch-head:
Hehe, thought Dave would get this one if anyone. The song came out in 1965 and is often voted one of the best songs of all time.
Gonna give it away, but in more recent times the artist was also in a group with George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison.
The group Travelling Wilburys comes to mind, but the song still remains a mystery, I'm afraid. I think it's to the point of googling it.
You're right about me "should have" getting the song. Especially since I agree that it's one of the best songs of the era it was released in. No clue as to why I blanked on it. :-\
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRDQZdrb2rY
Sometimes words out of context just don't trigger - I agree it was time for a Google ;D
Yes it was Like A Rolling Stone from Bob Dylan.
Now does my...
Mick Jagger ? Kind of...
Make sense now :D
That was great cryptic clue Freddy, I feel that I should have got it.
OK, listening to the radio yesterday this classic song came on, not sure if it made it over the pond, was released in the UK in the late 70's.
QuoteFrom Milan to Yucatan
Every woman, every man
Oh, I know this one, but I can't quite dig it out of my melon. It SOUNDS like "Dancing in the Streets", but isn't quite right. Let me think on it while I'm at the doctor's today.
Now Dave says that I'm not so sure, but I will have a punt on...
Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick - Ian Dury & The Blockheads.
Yeah you got it Freddy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WGVgfjnLqc
Yucatan is what stood out. ;D
Yeah, Yucatan was also sticking out for me, but only in that it sounded wrong for Dancing in the Streets. God on you, Freddy!
Here's a new one :
QuoteRunnin' down the avenue
See how the sun shines brightly in the city
On the streets where once was pity
A cryptic clue for the band to go with it :
A not very heavy assemblage of post steam age musicians ?
Ok, so the band is ELO, but the words aren't ringing any bells, so I need to think on it.
As soon as Dave said it was ELO I got it, great tune for the summer 8)

Great job, Data! Glad I could nudge you in the right direction! :)
Well done to you both, yes ELO Mister Blue Sky
I enjoyed making up the cryptic clue for that one :)
New one :D
QuoteWhen I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station
Running scared,
I've got an idea for this one but I'm not sure it's right.
Have you got one of your cryptic clues ?
A clue...
QuoteFloats like a butterfly
Muhammed Ali is all that springs to mind, I'm afraid. No clue.
Extrapolate.
OK looks like this is a toughie. The song was sung by a famous duo, and it was released in 1970.
Opening lyrics :
QuoteI am just a poor boy
Though my story's seldom told
I know them lyrics, it's a Simon & Garfunkel song but I didn't know what it's called, did some YouTube searching and found it "The Boxer" now the clue makes sense :D

Duh! I feel stupid now. Thanks for the challenge, Freddy, and well done, Data! :)
Have a go at this one chaps:
Quote
Pale blinds drawn all day
Nothing to do, nothing to say
Is it David Bowie ?
Yes it is Bowie but which song :D
Thought it might be Ashes to Ashes but after singing it in my head a few times I reckon it might be Fashion ?
I thought you had it there but no, it's earlier than both of them, think 1979.
Sang it out loud a couple of times and it came back to me. I remembered "Blue, blue, electric blue..." too. It's Sound & Vision.
Quite tricky to recall, I thought it was Bowie straight away, I must have listened to his greatest hits hundreds of times back in the day and that's one of my favourite songs of his.

Yep, well done mate, it's one of my favourite tunes of his too, surprisingly few lyrics in the song. It was playing in a shop I was in the other day, knew I had to use it in this thread.
Here's one :
QuoteI went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill
Clue time.
Do they gather no moss ?
A Rolling Stones song maybe :scratch-head:
Yup.
I'd like to tell you the answer but...

I'd like to tell you the answer but...
You can't always get what you want ?
Correctomundo
It was the clues that gave it to me, really didn't know them lyrics were even in the song.
Will see if I can come up with a new one later.
I finally got a song to put in, a bit old.
"Got to give myself a good talking to this time
Need a little brain salad surgery
Got to kill this insecurity"
Good luck

I can't place this one at all :scratch-head:

Same here, not a clue on this one, I'm, wondering if it made it over here in the UK.
Possibly not all that popular here either, parts of the country probably never heard of him. Well known and respected jazz singer from New Orleans. I like his music and voice. Give you guys a few more days.
Carl2
90% of the jazz I listen to these days is instrumental, or has very obscure lyrics, so I'm not going to be very helpful here. Sorry.
The only Jazz man I think I know from there is Louis Armstrong, but I am only familiar with his well known songs.
Was Fats Domino another New Orleans guy ?
Like Dave, I do enjoy some instrumental Jazz occasionally.
Answer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6RtVmc5dSE
Dr John Right place Wrong time
For me kind of a fun song.
Carl2
Never heard of him so I would never have got that. A funky sound though 8)
To continue the "medical" theme (that's a hint about the artist, BTW), here's a somewhat obscure set of lyrics to boggle the brain:
Quote from: unknown artist
So pull up your pants 'cause here's your chance
Now it ain't gonna be easy but we want you to try (Aw gonna try)
And if you can do it then maybe so can I (I certainly hope so)
More info:
Released in 1975
the artist never made it to the Billboard charts, but they DID make the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine.
I tried doing a search at you tube popular songs in 1975, couldn't find it.
Carl2
Hmm, doctors, doctors...
Dr Feelgood ?
Dr Feelgood is a song, to be sure, but we're looking for a band.
Here's a hint:
One of this group's most popular songs was an "unofficial theme song" for the late 60's and early 70's, and the laid back counter culture poet, Shel Silverstein (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shel_Silverstein), wrote a lot of this group's songs.
That last was a HUGE hint, and has likely given it away. ;)
I did a search for Shel Silverstein and came up with Dr Hook and looked through his songs, but he also wrote songs for other people and bands. So far mothing that matches the lyrics.
Carl2
I have to admit that the song is pretty obscure, but when you find it, it's sure to "lift your spirits". :D
The only Dr Hook song I can remember is When you're in love with a beautiful woman, but I don't think it's that.
I kind of liked this game, I'll have to see if I can come up with another song.
