Title: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Snowcrash on March 18, 2011, 21:00:01 PM
Seeing as I got more posts in my APOD thread by asking what the background music was, I thought I'd startup this thread and see where it goes.

Here's the first one...

Am I the half of half and half,
Or am I the half that's whole.
Got to be one with all my halves,
It's my worthy earthly goal.

This one is fairly obscure from 1983. No googling the lyrics you cheats.

Whomever guesses right has to do the next one. Just pick a fav from your youth.

I somehow think I should know this, and I think it rings a little bell but without a google I don't think I'm going to get it.

Post by: Snowcrash on March 20, 2011, 01:38:32 AM
I puposely picked one I thought you wouldn't get.

I'm pished and it's 1:35 am and I'm not giving it away yet.

3 points available for band/song/album.

I will give 1 of these away PM sunday after I sober up. Go on and google it and see if you're any the wiser.

All spelling mistakes due to red wine.

I got it from google.

Echo And The Bunnymen - Clay

Ok, how about this one:

Zoo time is she and you time
The mammals are your fav'rite type
You'd better want her tonight.

Tell me Data which version do you require?, the original by Sparks, or, the cover version by The Darkness.

For me it has to be the original:-

This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Use.

Ok, so this should be very easy, but, full title please.

The clouds were afraid one ten in the shade and the pavements were steaming.

It's your turn now Diesel!!

I never knew they were the lyrics. I knew the song, of course.

If you'd put...
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat.

I may have got it.

Here's the vid for those who are wondering what we're talking about or just want to hear it.

Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Snowcrash on March 26, 2011, 13:53:05 PM
That seems right to me. Carefull when clicking 'cos there's a rude word.

I've never heard of them. Sounds a lot like Green Day to me. Your go Diesel.
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: GT40 on March 26, 2011, 17:39:29 PM

Bravo Diesel and Snowcrash! Now a video made with some images from the movie. No "visible" rude word inside.  ;D

Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Snowcrash on March 27, 2011, 12:16:21 PM
The rude word is still there.

I have never heard of the original film or the re-make. I assume the song was from the re-make.

Doesn't look like Diesel wants a go so I'll have another.

My, my,
Sun is pie.
There's fodder for the cannons,
And the guilty ones can all sleep safely,
All sleep safely.

Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics

I know that one Snowy, and I didn't have to google it  :o

Might even name the song and artist later, but don't want to jump right in there.
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics

Is that XTC, forget the song, maybe Senses working overtime or something like that ?
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Data on March 27, 2011, 15:11:43 PM
Thats what I thought it was too Freddy.

Think I have a CD single of the song somewhere.

Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Snowcrash on March 27, 2011, 15:48:52 PM
Maybe that one was too easy.

That's one to Freddy. I'm not sctually keeping score.

So, that'd be your go Freddy, unless Diesel wants to jump in as I feel I nicked his go.
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Freddy on March 27, 2011, 20:25:04 PM
Ok, not sure if it is easy or not.  Even if the XTC one might have been easy, I was pleased I got it :)

Here goes, probably too easy, but you never know :

By the way, did I break your heart?
Please excuse me, I never meant to break your heart
So sorry, I never meant to break your heart
But you broke mine
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics

Aha a Marillion fan.

Got that one straight away.

Kayleigh, is it too late to say I'm sorry?

I'm playing with the lyrics a little on this one. Only giving you the ones I think you may not get.

A mulatto, an albino
A mosquito, my libido.
And I forget just why I taste

I can't believe no one has got this song yet. You'll kick yourself when you realise what it is.

less sneaky lyrics are...

A mulatto, an albino
A mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey, yay

And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile

Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Diesel on March 29, 2011, 20:36:43 PM

Right, back on track, here's a really obscure one for you all.

                                            Hey and away we go,
                                            Through the grass,
                                            Across the snow
                                            Big brown beasty
                                            Big round face
I'd rather be with you than flying through space.

Google that if you like, best of luck. :P
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Snowcrash on March 29, 2011, 21:20:39 PM
Didn't mean to sound offensive. Carry on GT40 esp. if the lyrics fit the google search.

I have no clue as to this song. Neither has Google but I expect Diesels post to be there soon.

Did you write it? A family member?
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics

Lol Snowcrash!  ;D

I confirm I don't play anymore. The winner is:

Oh! I got  ;D

Did I google? Sorry can't remember. :mutley:
To be honest I've never heard the song, so how I know the lyrics :scratch-head:

Mike Oldfield - On horseback

My turn, give me a while to come up with a stonker, unless someone else wants to jump in.

Very well done Data, I didn't expect that one to be found quite so quickly. I've been thinking about clues all day, never under-estimate the power of the inter-net ;D.
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Data on March 31, 2011, 13:20:33 PM
Yeah I like a challenge and when Snowy said he couldn't find it on google, it got me searching :D

How about this one, is it too obvious? Maybe

She met a man she liked she thought she'd stay with him
When he informed on them they did away with him
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Snowcrash on March 31, 2011, 17:49:20 PM
I don't know but have worked out a way of using google in reverse as it were.

Think of a song you think it may be and then google that song to see if the lyrics fit.

It definitely is not Stool Pigeon by Kid Creole.

Trying to get some clue from the 'informed' bit.

They're only easy if you know the song. Was surprised how long to get my Nirvana song and Freddy's Marillion song I heard the lyrics as I read it. I did own 'Script for a jesters tear' on vinyl.

I wonder why you continue the game. Not fun at all.

Always the same winner: Big Brother Google.

(By the way of course, the answer is Boney M - Ma Baker).  ;D

Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Snowcrash on March 31, 2011, 23:14:25 PM
I know Data's musical taste at least a bit seeing as we've written tracks together.

Didn't know you liked Boney M

Some lyrics from memory...

Some people tell you that they're your friends
You believe them, you need them for what's round the river bend
make sure that you're recieving the signals they send
'cos brother you've only got two hands to lend.

If Data doesn't get this I'll be surprised.
If anyone else gets this I'll be pleasantly surprised.
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Data on April 01, 2011, 12:32:37 PM
Believe it or not I do have "The best of Boney M" CD, I converted it to MP3 a few years back, Ma Baker is one of the best tracks on it, that and Daddy Cool too.

Snowcrash of course I know that one ;D, and I don't need to google it. Have to agree with you, I would be pleasantly surprised if anyone gets it without a google.

For GT40 only...

Bonsoir
Ton vehicule n'a pas l`air d`avoir de passager
Peux-tu: Veux tu me recevoir
Sans trop te deranger?
Mes bottes ne feront pas trop d`echos dans ton couloir

Data should get this one too. Same band as last lyrics.

Google translate get this...

Good evening
Your car does not `have` air passenger
Can you: Will you receive me
Without too much bother?
My boots will not make too many echoes in your hallway

How close is that?
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics

Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: GT40 on April 03, 2011, 18:59:50 PM

Snowcrash, this story is very odd and funny. I didn't know the song. I thought it was a joke, a test for me, English lyrics you had translated to French with Google!! So I translated the supposed translation to English (reverse engineering, lol).

Finally I found the solution but all that is really crazy.

And yes, the translation was not so bad, maybe the first time I got a not totally ridiculous result from Google. :)

I guess if nothing else we can play this game and then watch the videos after, so how about this.

The warmth of your hand and a cold grey sky
    It fades to the distance

Yes he played guitar for them for a while on different occasions.  Also well know as a solo artist.  Axe legend, blues...that kinda thing.

He died in February  :(

I've been trying to rack my brain for Phil Lynot songs.  :-\

I do know Garry Moore but not this track.

Been trying to think of a dance track to put in here but saying
do you know the one that goes...
na-naa na-naa na-nat-na-nat na na-na-na-na doesn't quite work.  ???

And I wish I named this thread '80s music videos'

Ok Snowcrash, hold tight, here we go.

I have been trying to think of something that may be ironic, so here goes:-

The crowd roared as they started to race,
Around the track they drove at a deadly pace.

Ok, here's a little more:-

No one knows what happened that day

Still none the wiser. So googled it.

Supprisingly I do actually know this song. Ricky Valance, Tell Laura I Love Her.
What decade is this from? 60s I assume.

With these lyrics I shall drag this thread into the 90s

Sonically we're in control

The 60's indeed. Although the answer is correct, the video is not as it is a cover version. However, as no video is available of Richie Valance actually performing this song, given that he died with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper, well done Snowcrash. Now, where are my list of 90's lyric's, oh yes, I remember, on Google. ;)

Post by: Data on April 14, 2011, 13:00:28 PM
I know the song, but I did have to google to make sure.

Leftfield Original

Plenty of videos to choose from on YouTube, but I found this live version, good to see the band, but not the best live performance I have ever seen.

Like the song though.

I have some fond memories of this song and the intro still makes the hairs stand up on my neck.

Not bad for a live version and she fills the jump suit well.  :P

So, we've had the 60s, 70s, 80s and now 90s. Anyone for the naughties? Data?
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Data on April 15, 2011, 13:11:22 PM
I thought the jumpsuit was highly educational too  ;)

Ahh! the naughties, yeah there have been a few songs that grabbed my attention.

This one:

Blue, blue, blue,
waves they crash,
as time goes by,
so hard to catch.

I couldn't leave this one unsolved so here is the answer:

Has this thread died a death or does that mean back to the 80s?

Anyone is welcome to put up any lyrics they like. I'll leave it until someone else starts again.

Well Snowcrash, you should know better than anyone that nothing actually dies, it just changes it state of being.

Anyhow, some more lyrics for your delectation:-

                                                            The whole things lost,
                                                            I don't know why,
                                                            You have to laugh,
                                                            Or else you'll cry.

I have the tune going round in my head, yes I do know this one, but who was it and what was the song called.

No can't remember :'(
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Snowcrash on April 28, 2011, 17:58:59 PM
I've had the same feeling since reading the lyrics.

All I can come up with is
You have to live or else you die.

Being the next line ish.

In a ska stylie?
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Diesel on April 28, 2011, 23:38:57 PM
Ok, the next line's are

                                                                     You have to live
                                                                     Or else you'll die

I believe this was a one hit wonder, although I could well be wrong there, however, a local group, to me anyway.

Bit fishy this one isn't it. ;)

I've been to the pub wiv me mates and we can all sing this song but no-one can come up with the band so... I googled it.

The Piranhas - Tom Hark a Brighton band but if you watch, the original is by 'Elias and his Zigzag Flutes' from 1958

and the lyrics are (http://www.justsomelyrics.com/460877/The-Piranhas-Tom-Hark-Lyrics)...
                                                            The whole things daft,
                                                            I don't know why,
                                                            You have to laugh,
                                                            Or else you'll cry.

My go. How about...

Maybe just me.

Oh, how I remember this one. Early Seventies, TOTP.

The main reason I remember this so clearly is because I would alter the Lyric's to include my Sisters name, for which, I earned myself a thorough Beating and destroyed a metal waste bin with just the use of my back as well.

Happy Day's. ;D

Anyway, here you are

I looked up the lyrics for the song, its mouldy old dough repeated 4 times.

Clue makes sense when I Googled the song.

Dire Straits - Telegraph.

I'm not a major fan. I know the main hits but not this one.

I have been trying to do a different band/artist each time but hey, no rules here.
I will keep on the rock theme and here's one Data prob. wont get.

I'm thinking the clue could allude to Cat Stevens but I don't know any of his songs.. Didn't he become a Buddhist or something and change his name ?

Feline = Cat
Rocket designer without son = Stephenson('s Rocket) ... without son = Stevens ( I hear )

As I'm not yet familiar with all of the rules, and as I also have yet to go through every post in this thread, I think I'll defer to you at this time. It is, after all, your turn. :)

[edit] Ok, I've read through all ELEVEN pages, and amazed myself that I only got around 10% of the songs right off. Of course, the British bands that didn't get famous across the pond were impossible for me, but that's to be expected. I personally would have used the lyrics from Roller Girl for my Dire Straits song, since Sultans of Swing was so popular, and RG wasn't quite as... But that's just me. I've got lots of ideas, most of which are 6-7 on the obscurity scale, so I'll have to put on my thinking cap, and try to come up with something that's either easier, or (more likely) at least interesting enough to be worth the extra difficulty. :) [/edit]

Here's another one of my favourites, American band well known in the UK.

Band: Gorrillaz
Title: Feel Good Inc.

This is a good indication that I need to expand my musical acumen. :)

A quick question:

Are "cover songs" allowed? or how about lyric re-writes?
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Data on June 24, 2011, 23:09:51 PM
Firstly you should have posted the video to the song, Dave, tut tut  ;D

I think that's half the point of this thread, the videos, which reminds me, when its my turn I make sure I pick a song that I can find a video of, on YouTube.

Wont a cover be the same lyrics? In which case there might be 2 correct answers, that sounds ok to me, more chance of getting it right. ;)

Im not sure what you mean by lyric re-writes, but its your go, so hit us with a hit  8)

My bad. That's what I get for using the "Quick Reply" space, below. Just too lazy for my own good, sometimes. :( I shall endeavor to improve.

Ok, here's what I mean by a "lyric re-write (think Weird AL here, in general, but not specifically)

Now over at the temple
Oh! They really pack 'em in
The in crowd say it's cool
To dig this chanting thing

I tried to make that one fairly easy.

Took a bit of head scratching this one, but I finally got it and I swear I didn't cheat.

The Clash, Rock the Casbah.

Like Data, I'm not quite sure what "lyric re-write" means. I thought it pertained to a song where the lyrics had been changed such as Elton Johns' Candle in the Wind. Would this be correct Dave?. :scratch-head:

@Diesel: Right song, wrong lyrics and wrong artist. Close, though. For the artist, think courageous monarch and English fromage.

Think crusades, not Round Table, and translation, not type. And I just looked over the 2 websites that listed the lyrics I was researching, and the only difference there actually is is the chorus (the verses were out of order, and I must not have been paying attention). So my bad. I'll do better next time. :)

Interestingly enough, I'm finding two versions of the lyrics for the Clash, too, that indicate different choruses. Stranger and stranger.

Yup! Score one for Data! :D

Interestingly, this was the very first music video aired on MTV, which made it's debut on August 1st, 1981 (funny, I had thought it had first aired in 1979. Silly Dave!)

I've found a few places that list the lyrics for one hit wonders, so be warned! They're gonna get harder. :P

Incidentally, Data, that video is a later re-make. Below is the original, with a link to the actual MTV debut below it:

I think it's, Marylin Manson, Beautiful People which was used for the Theme for one of the Smackdown's.

'Love Reign O'er Me' by The Who from Quadraphenia. The only album of theirs I got into was Tommy.

Also found this version by Pearl Jam.

I'm going for the saucy lyrics with...

An obscure Rocky Horror song by Janet if memory serves. And now a song Diesel says is easy.

I have cheated, so I wont give it away but easy? I do know the song but not from these lyrics. Takes me back to my school daze. (sic)

Even with

A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below.
There would be one long staircase just going up,
And one even longer coming down,
And one more leading nowhere, just for show.

I don't think I'd get it. But then I'm not a musical fan.

Well done Data, right song, however not the original artist. There have been many cover versions, hence I requested the original artist just to make things more interesting. Whether this version is the best or most memorable, is clearly open to debate and/or personal taste.

Bowie, one of my all time favourite artists, has produced some brilliant stuff over the years and very little or no dross in my opinion.

What still no Vid, oh well.

The reason I picked this one?.

Several years ago, I was on holiday at a nice place in Devon, The English Riviera ?, yeah right. Anyway, one of the entertainers, whom was a bit of a fruit cake, announced he was in fact the lead singer from the 70's group White Plains. Who ?, I thought, but once he sang their songs, I thought, Ah yes. So whenever I hear this little number, it takes me back to that Holiday (vacation for the Yanks, nothing personal Yanks). That's all it is.

Oh, well. Here goes...

                I'm not numbed out anymore,
No longer filled with hate and pain.
                No longer trenched in shame,

This is a real song, not a confession  :o

**edited 2 "I'm" s out.

You'll all remember this song when it comes to the video. I hope.  ???

Next lines are ...

                   I'm not numbed out anymore,
Now I own the key to the door.

You'll also recognise the backing singer.

REALLY!

It's from 1991 and it's one of those songs that make the hairs on my neck stand on end.

Jah Wobble was the basist for Public Image Ltd and then went solo. And lost it judging by some of the music.  :-X

These are his releases (http://www.30hertzrecords.com/releases/), there's several pages.

I don't have a proper guess right now. The lyrics sound sooooo familiar, but nothing comes to mind, and I'm not ready to Google it yet. Lemme think on it a bit, and see if something shakes the dust off my RAM.

Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: DaveMorton on April 13, 2018, 18:13:14 PM
It was one of my favorites at the time, certainly. It's funny, because I recognised it in less than 5 seconds, but the only reason it dawned on me that that was the song was because before I had actually read the words, my subconscious grabbed the words and started playing the song in my head. It was all very surreal because I saw the post, began to read, then heard the song immediately. I wondered why that song was playing when the rest of my brain caught up and the metaphoric light lit. :D

I'll try to think of a good one. Stay tuned!

Oops? I had forgotten it was my turn again. Silly me! I don't know whether this will be a challenge or not, but here it is:

Quote
Once we were standing still in time,
Chasing the fantasies that filled our minds.

the song is rather old, but there have been some covers that were also popular, so there's that. :)

Oh, and bonus points if you can tell me the movie it came from. :P

I have a question and I'm hoping that someone can come up with an answer.  Music and singers have gone through a lot of changes over the years, there was a time when people playing instruments could make the instrument sound like it was talking, like a voice coming from the instrument.  I became interested in this and remember it well but I can't come up with a record title that demonstrates this.  Can anyone come up with a song that demonstrates this.

All I get in my mind is something about trains and cigs. If I had to guess, I'd say late 60's, early 70's, but that's just a vague impression, and nothing solid. I rather pride myself on having a rather eclectic and wide ranging knowledge about music, but I know that I've only ever heard a bare smattering of what's out there. :)

I had forgotten that Phil Collins version was a cover, listened to both, I like the gentleness of the original better, I think.

Ok this is a test, has anyone listened to the lyrics of one of the songs I posted in random music vids  :D

QuoteYou were the shadow to my light
Did you feel us
Another start
You fade away
Afraid our aim is out of sight
Wanna see us
Alive

Since I always liked Phil I'd have to say I like both versions of the song about equally well.  I found it interesting both dressed like the were dressing for a show rather than wearing ripped jeans.
No Idea what Data is referring to.

Oh well everyone failed the test

Actually I posted these lyrics to give me a reason to post a live version of the song I found.

I may be getting older but I still like a lot of modern music.

Good singer with a good voice but I think her voice got lost mixing with the music, I wish I was at the mixer and could add more to bring her voice out. Oh well.
I came across a jazz station where I heard Billy Holiday, from 1920 and 30's,  I still like her voice, it seems horns are no longer used in music today.  We did have some really great singers and musicians now lost.

I like Billie Holiday Carl, and Blue Moon is a very evocative song no matter who seems to sing it.

Going again with my theme of old and new.

I'll do my best to post something here by morning. I'll try to make sure it's something that everyone here has a chance to get, so pond-crossover, early 70's to mid-90's, I'm thinking? AFoS comes to mind, but that's fairly obscure on this side. Have to think on it. :)

ok, here are a brace of them:

1. the artist is also a "comfort food"
2. there's only one degree of separation (or is it zero?) between the artist and both Susan Sarandon and Tim Curry
3. (bonus hint) in the states, the title of the song is a popular saying of consolation for "almost" success.

Meatloaf is very well known and liked over here on the whole, been having hits here since I was young.

Not sure if I know this song though - the name I got from the link to The Rocky Horror Picture Show and then the food treat popped into place.

Sang it out loud a couple of times and it came back to me. I remembered "Blue, blue, electric blue..." too. It's Sound & Vision.

Quite tricky to recall, I thought it was Bowie straight away, I must have listened to his greatest hits hundreds of times back in the day and that's one of my favourite songs of his.

To continue the "medical" theme (that's a hint about the artist, BTW), here's a somewhat obscure set of lyrics to boggle the brain:

Quote from: unknown artist
So pull up your pants 'cause here's your chance
Now it ain't gonna be easy but we want you to try (Aw gonna try)
And if you can do it then maybe so can I (I certainly hope so)

More info:
Released in 1975
the artist never made it to the Billboard charts, but they DID make the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine.

Dr Feelgood ?
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: DaveMorton on July 26, 2018, 10:44:04 AM
Dr Feelgood is a song, to be sure, but we're looking for a band.

Here's a hint:

One of this group's most popular songs was an "unofficial theme song" for the late 60's and early 70's, and the laid back counter culture poet, Shel Silverstein (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shel_Silverstein), wrote a lot of this group's songs.

That last was a HUGE hint, and has likely given it away. ;)
Title: Re: Guess the Lyrics
Post by: Carl2 on July 26, 2018, 12:38:26 PM
I did a search for Shel Silverstein and came up with Dr Hook and looked through his songs, but he also wrote songs for other people and bands. So far mothing that matches the lyrics.
