Title: Leaked Global Warming
Post by: Diesel on December 15, 2012, 09:34:46 AM
Here's an interesting link for you all, it's a leaked Draft Report from the IPCC.

http://www.stopgreensuicide.com/ (http://www.stopgreensuicide.com/)

Now the IPCC say that this report is only a draft and needs to be TWEAKED, probably because it doesn't bode to well for future Government Funding. Most of what I read was over my head and a translation would be nice, Snowy what are you upto for a few hours, please.

On the face of it, it would appear that Man is not solely responsible for Global Warming, no surprise there for me, so tweak away we all love paying Taxes.  :)

From the title I take it that we should be careful of out 'green' tech not making matters worse.

Global warming IS happening. Found this article of BA blog (http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2012/12/11/climate_change_denial_why_don_t_they_publish_scientific_papers.html).

At least 50% of global warming is down to us. Not you and me Diesel, the 7,000,000,000 odd human beings all wanting food/electricity/cars etc. This is likely to be as high as 90%. (have a look at some of the graphs in SummaryForPolicymakers PDF inc. page SPM-22).

Summary:- the global warming gun has been fired it is now down to how much we can alleviate/exacerbate it. Do not buy a house near sea level, especially on a flood plain.

Good reading and reiterates what I already thought, global warming is happening and man is at least partly responsible.

Also don't believe a politician when they say otherwise.

I was also going to make a joke that Diesel is partly responsible for this, have you seen his avatar there chucking out black smoke 24 hours a day? but than thought better of it, would have been a stupid joke.  :-\

Now just wait one Cotton Picking Minute here, if you recall, my Avatar was just a picture originally, it was you that brought it to life. All my fault again, oh for a selective memory.  ;D

Interesting visual from APOD (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap130731.html) to show any global warming deniers that they are wrong!

nice visual there of collected data.
though I think most of the deniers are only denying the causes, not the actual facts of earths temps increasing.

I've never denied that the climate has been changing; nor have I ever said that things weren't getting warmer.

That said, however, I have said in the past (and still feel this way today) that we simply don't know enough about the variables involved with the climate to say with any degree of certainty that we're significantly responsible, nor do we have enough hard data to definitively state that this isn't just part of a much, much larger cycle.

Of course, I could be (and quite probably am) talking out of the wrong orifice again. I do that from time to time. :D

The only 'controversy' is using the same line of argument that the tobacco industry used to say smoking doesn't cause lung cancer and that ID use to say evolution is only a 'theory'. Fox News being one of the biggest 'both sides of the argument' proponents.
We ARE causing 50-90% of the warming. There's plenty of data. It's down to what we do. Business as usual or change the program.

Bring your waders if you have them  ;D

Watched a program on the latest weather. This all started with the record hurricane in Indonesia. That disturbed the Pacific which in turn disturbed the northern jet stream causing the cold weather over mainland USA causing a big temperature differential to the Gulf of Mexico causing a conveyor of storms to hit us.

I have never seen the beach so high in Brighton. There's normally a 3 foot drop from the esplanade to the beach. In places, the beach is now on the esplanade.

A surge in atmospheric CO2 saw levels of greenhouse gases reach record levels in 2013, according to new figures.

'More worrying'

The bulletin suggests that in 2013, the increase in CO2 was due not only to increased emissions but also to a reduced carbon uptake by the Earth's biosphere.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-29115845 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-29115845)

What can we all do to reduce the greenhouse gasses ?

I have 2 vehicles, but both are (comparatively) "green", though far from perfect in that regard. All in all, I'd imagine that my carbon footprint is substantially smaller than that of the average American, though probably not as small as, say, the average UK citizen. But I could be wrong about that. After all, I only saw a small slice of life over there during my visit. :)

I wasn't targeting any of our members with my rant, as valid as it is  ;)  I know you lot are lost cases. I might have more chance with Snowy but even that is a long shot.

Dave I value our friendship far to much to start a debate with you on these matters.  :hats-off:

Pets add to it too. Like dogs cost a lot of money as well as the emissions...hmm that came out the wrong way...oh no so did that.... *runs away*

I don't think that a well-reasoned debate is any sort of risk to our friendship, truth be told. You lot here have already caused me to re-evaluate the issue of climate change, and things that I can do to help, but at this point, I think it's like trying to plug a hole in the dike with a sieve.

lol@ Freddy's "emissions"... :D

I'm back - emissions - it was on QI and they are usually reliable. They showed a photo of a regular family and they had a pet dog. The question was how could they reduce their carbon footprint the most. The answer was get rid of the dog. So things like food production (for the dog), transport, packaging and so on were the things they mentioned that would reduce the footprint if they did not have this dog.

I was a happy vegetarian for three years back in my student days. Trouble was after a while, KFC became too tempting and after a few drinks of a night it seduced me back to meat again. I think I might start eating more fish to replace the meat in my diet though.

And yes that little tool is not working here either - gets stuck with the ajax 'Loading...' message at the top of the screen.

Also... with our stupid government contemplating using fracking to get out dated fuel sources I fear they really don't give a shit about the environment.

That's not going to change until another energy source becomes profitable. It's money and power, not the higher ideals of good government, that drives both our governments.

Yeah if it wasn't for money we wouldn't wait until it's too late or in best case scenario "allmost too late" before we *The Humans* do something about it.

I noticed the edit bug too, will look in to it.

BTW, just to let you know, when I eat mostly flora, ~MY~ "emissions" go up drastically, and those same emissions are FAR and AWAY more toxic! Trust me when I say that no cow on the planet can put out more CO2 and methane than I can when I'm on a veggie diet. :P

So... Do I agree with that video, and run the risk of being called a "yes man"? Or should I go against my instincts (not to mention my principles), and argue with it, just so that I'm not seen to agree with everything on the planet? Hmmm...

Screw it! I'm going to stick to my guns here (as I usually {but not always} do {I'm such a coward, at times}), and say that the video above hits the mark square on. :)

However, I feel that those who "hate" someone for their views and refuse to at least understand why are sadly obtuse, and should learn lessons in both tolerance and humility.

Ok, done ranting. I feel better now. :)

Oh, just FYI, nobody from these forums (fora???) were intended (or actually, for that matter) the subject of the above rant.

I liked that 'Be Hated' video, I think I generally agree with him. YouTube is full of trolls. For a long time it put me off YouTube. These days though I tend not to read the comments much, too many idiots out there.

Recently I think I upset a few people on FB by saying that English people should not get a vote over Scotland. I said it was about their right to self determination not what the rest of the UK thought about it. It's a case of suck it and see. One person I have known for years really did not seem to read properly what I said and was just being stubborn that she wanted a say. No one else really said anything. The silence was deafening. Ho hum.

I tried to drag this thread back on topic but hey, if you can't beat 'em...

I found a YT comment starting by calling one of the two people in the video being 'a kind of an asshole'. The comment then progressed into a discussion of what their expectations of the conversation or interview were. It then ended amicably with both commenters sort of agreeing.
A third commenter then pointed out a comment actually ended in amicable debate. I had to do a thumbs up. See for yourself. Scroll to comment starting 'Hank Green is kind of an asshole.' by Simeon Murphy
This is obviously the exception to the rule of the usual idiots.

With the rising sea levels, shouldn't we all be thinking about moving to higher ground. Maybe not in our life time but maybe one day. And... where's the high ground in the UK ? You see what I did there ?

Now granted, I didn't go very many places, but I know that Castle Acre is pretty high up, and I suspect that Dover is well elevated, too (or, at least, the cliffs seem to be. :P )

I'm sure there are other places, too, and if the Scots get their way (well, some of them, at least) and start digging that trench to separate you from themselves, the resulting pile of dirt could end up being the tallest place on the island, so that could help, as well. :D :P

Yeah we'd be fine on Castle Acre for a while I think. Come to think of it, I didn't see anyone living there when we visited  :D

There's some high ground in England, but for the real high ground, at least by our standards, you have to go north and up into Scotland. I went up there a few times, it's very beautiful. Great to just drive around looking at all the scenery.

The Lake District gets up to 900 odd meters (2800 feet). Even if we manage to melt both ice caps, I don't think the sea will get that high.

Don't buy at sea level or near a flood plain. Or anywhere near/in New Orleans.
