Rumor has it that for each help wanted ad, a thousand résumés are received. Human Resource Departments, typically take the top half of the pile of résumés, and tosses them right into the garbage pail.
Sounds like a believable rumour, a shame but believable.
This rumor is based on a true account... It comes from a woman I know who shared, that her daughter works for a department in charge of hiring for a large corporation. With hundreds and hundreds of résumés, in response to a single help wanted ad, there is simply no way they can possibly go through them all. So they just divide the stack of résumés in half, and toss the top half right in the garbage without reading them.
Between, expensive postage, high priced printer ink cartridges, stationary paper, envelopes, and other expenses which quickly add up. Résumés probably cost about a dollar each to mail out. So, hiring departments are easily tossing hundreds of dollars of job seeker's money right in the trash.
And, of course... This would never make the news.
Rumor has it, college graduates, holding Masters degrees, are taking jobs as bank tellers. Their student loans became due. So, accepting underemployment is their only choice to make their loan payments.
