Title: Sci Fi Musings and (possible?) Revelations...
Post by: DaveMorton on July 07, 2011, 14:05:42 PM
I'm reasonably certain that most (if not all) of the visitors here are, to one extent or another, fans of Science Fiction, so this may (or may not) be somewhat interesting. Or, perhaps not. Take it as you will. :P

1.) The Terminator series of robots are nothing more than an Anti-virus program gone horribly wrong.

2.) (somewhat involved, so bear with me) The event that occurred in the Star Trek TNG episode "Ship in a Bottle", where Geordi tells the holodeck computer to create a villain that can "beat Data", was exactly the same as what happened in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", when Arthur Dent asked the Nutri-matic Drink Dispenser to make him some tea. This is why networking computers is, ultimately, a REALLY BAD idea.

Just some thoughts that have occurred to me this morning. As I said, make of it what you will. :)

I think you are right, most of us are Science Fiction fans, I have every episode of Star Trek TNG on my HDD.

The moral of the story:
Be careful what you ask a truly intelligent computer to do, think twice before you ask that question or It might actually do exactly what was asked of it.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending or your view of Ai, we don't have such an intelligent machine right now, but when we do, be very careful.

You have been warned humans.  :o

Someone needs to work out how to program the 3 laws of robotics  :D

Or is that 4? The naught-th rule comes later.

See the memristor link (http://www.datahopa.co.uk/forum/new-technology-science-etc/memristors/) for the Terminator style TiO² chip of our future.

If you don't want to see the whole 47 mins of the 2nd video then goto 19:00 for the last bit and/or 36:30 for what I'm talking about chip wise. * and 42:20

Been re-reading posts and this made me think again. The main difference with your 2 linked ideas is the holodeck worked, the Heart of Gold still couldn't make a cup of tea. From memory it made a cup of something that tasted almost but not quiet, exactly unlike tea.
