It's his vision that we humans (aka - puny Earthlings) not only make a trip to Mars but live there, set up shop and inhabit the planet and grow to 1,000,000 people by 2050 (30 years from now).

Elon does have some pretty exciting ideas and the money to back most of them up, you never know it could happen. Can't help thinking I might have been born a tad early for this one.

Oh, it probably will some day, just not in 30 years time.
For those that enjoy lockdown, breathing from a bottle, cold and geology - then short term Mars will be fine.
The difficulties of living on a hostile planet that you have to bring or make everything you need to live, including oxygen, make global warming problem pale into insignificance.
Agreed and the same could be said for many Earthlings who have divided to try living off the grid, away from all those conveniences like electricity, supermarkets, city-maintained water, gas, fuel oil, etc.
That should be a requirement for any potential Martian hopefuls that are intent on making that 8 + month voyage then setting up shop on that cold, desolate planet!
Good luck to them for sure!
(Initially, everything will be provided for them. The real question might be, what will they do if supplies run low and no replacements are on the way? How truly resourceful will they be?)

Forgive me but I'm a bit confused over that comment.
The Earthlings could simply make there own electricity from solar and wind. (Mars has plenty of sun and wind for power too)
Gas and fuel shouldn't be needed at all, ok maybe a little oil for lubrication.
To me going off grid on Earth doesn't mean you can't visit supermarkets.

Of course on Mars people would have to be completely self sufficient, even make their own oxygen, but to compare attempting to live on a barren planet to people going off the electricity grid here on earth does seem to be pushing it a bit, at least to my mind, starting a new civilisation from scratch is a whole new ball game isn't it or am I missing something?
