Found this while browsing youtube and thought it pretty interesting:

You know I have wondered why we are still using air in tyres in 2012, the risk of punchers or hi-speed-blow-outs, there must be a better way of doing it these days.

Maybe something like this will start to appear on cars in the not too distant future.

Those tires are sweet, I want a set for my suv.

It set me to thinking, if it works on something like that why not baby buggies / strollers as well it would make for a much less bumpy ride for the little ones too.......just a though.

Now if I just knew how it was made.......

This technology is far from new. One of the inherent problems with this system is it's ability to distort. As can be seen from the vid, the whole structure deforms when traversing an obstacle, clearly the reverse would occur, at speed, due to centrifugal force. Hence, this sysyem would only be suitable for low speed applications currently. Essentially, the wheel would end up Pear shaped, pretty much as seen on a Top Fuel Dragster and that would be in a straight line.

I would imagine there could be quite a few Heart Stopping moments trying to steer around a sharp bend at speed. 

As for using compressed air in tyres, it's cheap, efficient and one thing this world has plenty of currently.

And as long as we have politicians, the supply of such will never diminish.
