World's largest digital camera one step closer to reality

Construction on the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), a 3. 2 billion-pixel camera that will capture the widest, fastest and deepest view of the night sky ever observed, could begin in 2014.

And with good reason, too. From what I read, the optics in it weigh in at over 3 tons, and the thing was designed to be mounted to an 8.4 meter (27 feet, 5 5/8 inches) telescope! That means that the diameter of the telescope is just over half the length of the Hubble Space Telescope! And considering that the HST only barely fit into the cargo bay of the space shuttle, you can quickly see that orbiting a behemoth like that would be a logistical nightmare! :o

Still in all, I'd love to see it in orbit, too. :) We could see the Big Bang 5 seconds before it happened! :P
