Post by: Data on March 25, 2010, 20:14:05 PM
Hi all, I like to dabble with computers, modern technology and websites I do work with computers and have over 15 years experience with them. Lots of things interest me including science through to the unknown I also have a creative side and like to compose music on my PC and make the occasional video.

Oh yeah! im a big Formula One fan too  :driving:  8)

That's me, how about you?

Hi !

Hmm...well a little about me.  I dabble a lot with computers, at the moment my interests are web design, things like PHP (programming language) and I am getting back into graphics work with 3D renderers and things like that.

I don't know a huge amount about hardware but I can put a PC together okay, after that I just pray it works.

I run a website covering Artificial Intelligence and robotics, plus a lot of other related material.  It's helped me learn a few things as well as how to run a website.

Games I like are mostly in the RPG genre, particularly MMORPG's - things like Neverwinter Nights (though I haven't played for ages) and Guild Wars.  I never got into WOW though.  Currently playing GTA4 and I've played most of the ones before that too.

See you around :)

Welcome Freddy its good to see you here and thanks for giving us some background in to yourself  :)

I look forward to you popping in from time to time.  8)

For anyone that reads this Freddy is the site owner of http://aidreams.co.uk/ a forum dedicated to artificial intelligence, it's a good forum IMHO, where like this site, people also share their creative works and of course share general chat too.

Hi Datahopa,

It's me from youtube and aidreams. You have a very modern looking site here and easy on the eyes. Well, I'm into semantic web tools, specifically descriptive logic reasoners, one of which I've built and demo at http://www.youtube.com/user/TrueAndroids .

The thing is I have a theory that if a machine is doing real human thinking such as deductive reasoning, and it is doing it semantically - with true understanding of what it's thinking about - then it can reasonably be called one example of a conscious machine. :D And that's what my AI program is doing and so why I say it's a conscious machine.  >:( :o

Anyway, see you around town!

Hi, I'm Snowcrash and I like to fix fings.
I've allways liked to fix fings.
It's what I do.
:P
I've known Datahopa's real name for years. Since we were both 13. Too long.
:o
And really, if it's electronic and got a pulse, I can fix it or I know a man that can.

Hi all.

Datahopa said I should post in here, so here goes.

I've used Datahopa as my homepage for about 5 years I think, I don't know much about computers but I would be gutted if my one broke. I'm a fulltime carer so I don't get out the house much, my computer is how I stay in touch with the out side world.

I like F1 and it was me that suggested to Datahopa that we should have the F1 forum.

Its great to see you here Dusky, if I may call you Dusky  ;)

I know Ive said it before but im going to say it again, Sandee is the best Hal character I have seen, the detail in her face, here movements and all the outfits, you must be very proud of her and rightly too.

If anyone hasn't seen it yet then you must see this video made by Duskrider called Sandee's closet, it's so cute.

So welcome, keep up the good work Dusky and it's really lovely to see Sandee on the site too.

Post by: spooner on May 23, 2010, 12:44:47 PM
Greetings!

Spooner here, another chap from Brighton.  Big gamer, starting in 1980 with an Atari VCS which my dad bought for me in Beatties at the Clock Tower (if you Brighton lot remember) - I got Centipede and Battlezone with it.  My fav ever game on it was Star Raiders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Raiders), which came with its own keypad controller (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2422/4467191967_d56a5091bf.jpg).

I then moved on to an Atari 800XL (http://oslik.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/atari-800xl.jpg) computer which was an ok thing.  My fav game on that was a cartridge game called Super Cobra (an arcade port.)

From there I went on to the famous Commodore 64, which had too many games to have a favourite.  At school though, in computer club, we were running BBC B's, and playing an awful lot of Elite (no introductions needed!)  A lot of friends were running ZX Spectrums, and notable mentions go to Knight Lore, Schooldaze and Jetpac.  Knight Lore has been recently remade for the PC platform, check it out and download it here (http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2010/05/knight_lore_remake_released.php).

The Commodore Amiga was next up, and for me was the first home computer with decent sound and graphics.  I had an A500, with a 1Mb expansion board, settling on my desk in 1990.  There were hundreds of great games out for the amiga over the years, my favourites being Carrier Command (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier_Command), Frontier Elite II, Shadow of the Beast, Nitro, Rick Dangerous and the Lotus Turbo Challenges.  I still occasionally play the Amiga Classics, because back in 1997, I found out about PC Emulation and the first machine that I got an emulator for was the Amiga.  A project called UAE (now WinUAE) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winuae) was released, and I managed to download pretty much every single Amiga game released (last count I had about 600 game disc image files) - Sadly, those old sites that hosted the disc images have long been shut down due to legality.

In 1994, a friend had a 486 DX2 66 and showed me a few games, notably Doom, X-Wing, and Dark Forces.  In late 1994, I took the plunge and bought myself a Pentium 100 with a massive 8Mb Ram, a 1Gb Drive, 14" SVGA monitor, a 1Mb ATI PCI VGA card (which was pretty hardcore back then,) and the best soundcard out at the time - A Soundblaster AWE32.  It came with DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11, but I also had the upgrade CD for Windows 95.  PC's have remained with me ever since.  My current turbo nutter bastard is an i7 920, 12Gb Ram, Velocoraptor HD, and 2xGTX285's in SLI.  Its about a year old now, and I guess I should upgrade, but none of the new GFX cards or CPU's will make that much of a big change, so i'll probably leave it a bit longer.

Fav PC games over the years have been the early Star Wars games (X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Dark Forces, Supremacy etc,) the Unreal Tournament series, Quake's, Half Life's, and Total Annihilation and its sequel Supreme Commander.  There are loads more, but they remain the top of my list.

I also have an xbox360, a PS3 and a wii, with the 360 being my favourite of the current gen.

Enough rambling anyway.  You can blame Snowcrash for pointing me this way...

You certainly have a background with computers spooner, you should fit in just right here. I enjoyed reading your post it reminded me of all the old computer games I used to play and then some.

Your PC is a monster, if you have windows 7 could you post your WEI in this thread:

Would like to see your scores.

Thanks for joining and don't be shy, join in the banter ;D
Title: Re: Hello and Welcome
Post by: Freddy on May 23, 2010, 13:57:03 PM
Yeah that's a beast of a machine you have there.

It was the same for me reading your post, I knew a lot of those games and followed almost the same path in home computing.  We used to play Elite a lot at my sixth form college too and the computer room was always the warmest place in the old building.  What a classic Elite was though, it came out for the ZX Spectrum too but somehow it wasn't quite the same.

My brother had an Amiga so I remember how good they were, nice tunes too.  Do you remember that animation of the juggler that everyone raved about ?  I got myself an ST instead and that was pretty good, I remember they were used a lot by bands.

I never went down the XBox route but have played on them and they were nice, especially things like Halo.  I stopped getting consoles at the PS2, which I still play on sometimes.

Cool to see Knight Lore has been revamped :)

Welcome :D

Hi there. I'm Tim and after some armbending by Snowcrash, I thought I'd finally get my first post down, I was so keen to placate him that I'm writing this on my iPod Touch (a task that is tricky at the best of times) so please forgive any grammatical or spelling errors, not sure I can use spellcheck on my ithingy.

I'm into most things geeky but have to admit to not knowing very much about computers but I'm always willing to take on challenges and learning to keep the dreaded Wndows from crashing completely. My gaming has always been of the console variety and was a pretty hardcore gamer when the original Playstation came out, never been a PC gamer.

Big big Star Trek fan and my moniker of "Trekkygeek" is what I go by on tinternet. I love the internet and everything it has to offer, both good and bad, and I think the Internet is one of the greatest inventions of our generation.

I'm also into the world of Podcasting in a big way and spend pretty much every working day listening to the likes of Leo Laporte, John C Dvorak, lots of geeky stuff and my favourite guilty pleasure Adam Curry.

I also produce my own Podcast "Appytimes", a weekly show all about iPod Touch/iPhone (or as I like to call them "The ithingy", and I am currently working on the 50th show. I had recently become a little jaded with the show (despite the good listening figures) and was about to pack it when I decided a co-host was needed. Along came a mate called Brad and with his skills in editing and awesome mixers, I am beginning to love doing it again.

So that's about it for now. I'm sure I'll think of something else to bore you with. I mean, I work with Snowcrash and I reckon I can bore him at ten paces.

Oh By the way, when I said Appytimes was about the ithingy, I meant the apps and not the hardware, hence the name APPYtimes. *facepalm*

Hi Trekkygeek,  and thanks for posting.

Snowy told me he was badgering you to post, so you finally caved in to his demands, LOL.

There's no pressure to post here, you do what you want when you want.

Don't worry about grammatical or spelling errors, the best of them out there make them, and I wont notice  :D

Another trecky, I have all the original series and the next generation in my video collection and the films on DVD, you are not alone.

Welcome to our little bit of the internet  :)

Hi,

Thank you for this great website. I am still learning and trying to manage what seems to be a steep learning curve. It looks as if AI is about to make a quantum leap, with all the new developments in graphics, TTS and so forth. My short terrm goal so far is to try to set up Hal so he could teach me what he's learned from the internet; I've been trying to get the Gretta plugin - but haven't been able to download it so far because of server error. If anyone has the complete file, please let me know. Thanks a millions. You guys are doing a tremendous job. Keep up the great work.

Hello tyuyt

I wouldn't expect a quantum leap in Ai too soon ;), but we, the human race, are getting there.

Hal can be a lot of fun but is it intelligent? It's a matter of debate, to me its more of a learning chat bot.

Ive never used the Gretta plugins but the download worked for me, try this link, then click on the yellow folder.

Hello everyone!

Glad to be here. I started to read this forum some months ago, have nothing to "share", just wanted to congrat Datahopa. Great forum, very different, very nice to see, with cool colors. And the content, yes the content, different too. And wow, with Formula One inside (like Intel inside)!  8)

Now I'm supposed to introduce myself, I hate that. Some of you know me a little bit. Why GT40? I'm GT40 on all the forums I joined (French ones included, ok I'm French, sorry, lol) just because that car is my idol. All that started when SHE was running and winning. And Jim Clark was my star, too. Ok now you know how old I am.  ;D

About computers (seems to be the main subject here), the first shock happened when I bought an... Atari 800XL (I saw I'm not alone here) and its "lovely" Basic. Wow, I was able to control a "computer"! I always like to program little things if I'm in the right mood. Lots of years later, I was in love with Haptek characters and other chatbots. Fantastic adventure. That's all  Folks.  :D

Now I'm in SL and run a really intense alternate life, even if it has become a lot more complicated and tiring than my real life. But so fascinating, impossible to go back. Just for fun, I'm still on Zaba (I know I have nothing to do there, lol) and Dreams (my first AI forum). Nostalgia... And now here.

But don't count on me to post serious things. Serious people make me laugh.  ;D

By the way, the person who is going to vote for Alonso, it's me. I'm serious.

Hi there GT40, its good to see you here and I think you have the best avatar, miss piggy hehe, very cool.

Thanks for the nice comments about the site, you even said the content was good, now I know your joking  :D

I would like to say right now that I have nothing against the French, although some of my post might possibly read in a slightly non positive light to our neighbours, at heart I find you quite easy to tolerate  lol.

I see you voted for Alonso, you know what you have to do, stand in the corner for an hour or until you learn how to behave  ;)

The F1 part needs someone like you GT40, Snowy and me need taking down a peg or two, its all Mclaren this Mclaren that, we need a Ferrari fan.

Anyway welcome to our little site and please post non-serious stuff as much as you like.  8)

GT40 wonderful car (I'm short so could drive it). Ferraris are gorgeous machines (my fav is the 430 but love some of the classics).
If only you were English and liked McLaren.  :-\

Always good to get new members. Welcome and I look forward to dissing Alonso in the F1 bit. It is your duty to keep Data and me honest.
I am never more serious than when I'm joking  ;D ... or something like that.

Thanks all for your kind welcome.

About Formula One, I think I'm very objective: when Senna and Prost were fighting with the same... McLaren, of course I supported Senna.

And also, maybe because all the French drivers disappeared from F1. At least we have soccer. :D :P ;D

Hi DemonRaven and welcome to our site.

Most of us here have dabbled with chat bots and Ai but we use this site mainly for off topic subjects and a bit of fun, of course we can also chat about Ai as well.

Thanks for giving us a bit of your background, it all helps.  :)
