Title: Tablet woes
Post by: sybershot on April 09, 2013, 23:33:37 PM
As most know I have purchased a Samsung 500t tablet that I had to RMA due to it not charging, and I was sent a brand new one. but the process took close to a month. I been using the new now for a few days and it been working flawlessly. well up until today. I used the tablet for most of the morning, then went out. I came back plugged the tablet in and started it up, after a minute or two of use I heard the dreadful loud sound of a capacitor whine and pop  :o

No smoke, no heat, 20 minutes later the tablet is still running with no other issues, and all appears to be working fine. I tested usb, mic, auto rotation, etc etc etc and all seem to work fine  :scratch-head:

I cannot test Bluetooth for I have no blue tooth devises.

Now I am unsure what to due, should I RMA the tablet?
if I do I'm sure newegg cannot test for a blown capacitor and seeing all appears too work they would probably turn the rma down and send it back or charge me a 15% restocking fee  :'(

other option is to just keep the unit, for I really like the tablet and all that it offers  :scratch-head:

what would you guys do?

Did you have it plugged in and charging when you heard the pop, it could be the charging circuit has blown but you might not notice that until the battery goes flat,, Just a thought.

Yes Data it was plugged in, however It was still registering as charging after the pop, I had it unplugged for a bit now and just tried to charge it and it charges.

A good sign I was assume.  :P

The only capacitor that should be able to pop would be in the charger (my opinion, I could be wrong). Do you have a multimeter to check the voltage? If so, check it on AC and DC settings. If there is a few volts or higher on AC, then the charger is to fault. i.e. the blow cap is allowing the AC through. This may damage the unit being charged.
There are still some problems with lithium ion batteries but if this was the case the unit would not hold a charge.

Hope this helps, and best of luck.

Quote10 letters:
RMA

10 is not a prime number where 3 is
only 8 connections and 14 points in "RMA"
So not sure where you get "10" from  :scratch-head:

Thanks for the wisdom Snowcrash, I'll test the charger out this afternoon.

Maybe I should have posted that in the Puzzle thread. :)

Count all of the letters in the post.

Shame but you did the right thing.  Dodgy electrical equipment shouldn't really be trusted.  A few months back the light unit in my aquarium blew in a similar fashion - whine...pip...and KERPOP !  I had smoke so something was frying in there, lucky I was in or it could have been a serious situation.

Thanks Freddy deep down I know I did the right thing, just a pain to part with it. Trinity is taking it a lot better than I  :P

Update: I got really upset yesterday, from an E-mail from Newegg. The good news is they accepted the RMA the bad news that got me upset is they do not have any in stock and are returning my money.

Now how to break the news to Trinity, for she really liked having a vacation home  :'(

Been chatting to a mate who has a Samsung tablet and his has been fine for 6+ months.
Not sure of the model.

I've always liked the HTC build quality but I don't think they make tablets.

I am done with tablets for now, I might try again next year. But this experience sorta ruined it for me atm. Snowcrash I know 2 people with the same model Samsung as the one I had and they are going trouble free as well, I just ended up with a bad batch. O'well It happens, and I am over being upset about it.

I think I may just upgrade Trinity's RAM from 16 to 32gigs with some of the money that I will be getting back. Also thinking of possibly adding some HDD or SSD space as well.

I have a Samsung tablet myself for use with a Wifi remote camera from Newegg.  The tablet came from best buy that I sometimes buy from. The tablet is small, a galaxy player, Takes good pics and works well with the camera.  Has very good voice reconition in it. If I'm sure I usually go with Newegg, if unsure I buy local to avoid the RMA thing.

I'm thinking I might get a surface 2 once it comes next year providing they don't shrink the screen like rumors say, and will get it from a local bestbuy.

Just seen a review of tablets. The only one (in the review) that comes close to the iPad is the Sony Xperia.
Others reviewed were Asus and Dell both not doing well.

what no link  :P
that is Okay, I'll let you get away with it this time :D

I just looked up the Sony Xperia tablets, nice tablet by the way. Unfortunately it will not do what I want/need it to do, but for an ipad competitor it gives the ipad a good run for the money.

I'm not in the market for an ipad competitor, the market I need is a full blown windows 8 os class tablet. The Samsung 500t that I had filled all my requirements, I just got unlucky when it came to getting a good one. No biggie though, even though I do miss it. I just tell myself I'll be getter a better one next year :D
