Mrs Data recently got one of these:

It's a dual core with hyperthreading so there are 4 cores in Windows, for what it is it's not that bad at all, speed wise.

Windows 7 Starter is a little annoying, haven't had it that long to check it out but so far all I can find that it doesn't do is desktop themes, i.e. you can't change the desktop wallpaper.

How mean of MS is it to prevent you from changing the wallpaper

Done a google on it and found 3 ways of changing the wallpaper, some seem better than others, need a bit more time to look into it more.       

I have faith that you will find a way, however will you be able to get it out of Mrs Data's hands long enough? My wife when she first got her new laptop, I could not pry it from her hands for at least a week 

  I've seen a computer with a windows basic OS, I think it's so the cpu has less things to do and just working at the task at hand it can do it faster, less powerful cpu that appears fast so it saves on the cost of the cpu.  I've also seen some kind of computer for kids, very basic OS with a few apps so you have a computer at low cost for kids.
