That's right, its official, XP users have 20 months remaining (from today) to switch over to Windows Vista, 7 or 8.

All support including security up-dates will be stopped on April 8, 2014.

XP "die hards" will have to seriously think about changing their OS if they wish to remain safe on the web, hackers and those nice people that make viruses know there are plenty of users who refuse to change, they will sit and wait for the end date then make some nice new hack or virus, safe in the knowledge that Microsoft will not patch the OS.

You have been warned

Not just you DD, there are plenty of people that view this site that uses XP still.

Don't panic just yet, you have 20 months to think about it, but don't think too hard.

I recently built a basic (not gaming) windows 7 machine for under £250 all in, so its not like its going to cost a huge amount of money.

I've done some checking over here in the states, and I found that I can get a laptop computer with Windows 7 for just about the same price, with desktop computers running about $100 more.

What I find interesting is that Windows 7, by itself, runs just over a quarter of that price. :)

Will have to see how it goes Data, have a lot going on at the moment to be honest so don't really have the spare dosh although I suspect that the old girl is getting to the point of needing to be replaced after 6 years  :D

These days, a six-year-old computer is practically ancient. :-)

When I look at my computer, I'm reminded of the story of the man with the axe. I've had the same computer now for 16 years, and yet there is not a part of it that is older than five years old. :)

Most of our Diagnostic equipment, at work, uses XP as it's OS, even the most recent gear. I guess it's dirt cheap and simple to intergrate. It will be interesting to see how this situation is over come with regard to updates for the diagnostic programmes.
It WILL be fine !...
