Title: F1 2010 Developer Diary 2
Post by: Freddy on April 30, 2010, 14:16:17 PM
Thought I better put this in the game section rather than the F1 board.

The graphics on these games are getting incredible now.  I like racing games, but I prefer arcade handling rather than a simulation, I find the simulations difficult.  :P

Nice find Freddy, I did know this game was coming out around the end of the year but what I didn't know was that its going to be on the PC, I can't believe it, at last a new and very nice looking F1 game for the PC, packed with loads of new features too.

Hmm I think its going to be on the PC,, at least that's what it says on the Wiki page.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F1_2010_(video_game) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F1_2010_(video_game))

I know what you mean about arcade style games, you can just get in the car and drive, no set-ups just drive. I do tend to cheat and use driver aids in racing sims, yep! I find them hard too  :-X.

I thought Sony bought all the F1 game licences and were only doing F1 games for PS3

I am happy to see it coming out on PC but I have a PS3, steering wheel and gaming chair so either way I'll get it.
Yes, I know I'm a geek but I'm proud and old enough to be able to afford the good stuff.

This setup but with cheaper seat. Total driving fun.

Thanks for posting that Freddy, boy this game looks and sounds good, the detail on the cars and track is so spot on and its really good to hear the real sound of an F1 car in game, all other F1 games I've played seem to have fake engine sound, to someone that is an avid follower of F1 you notice all the little points.

Frame rate is king  in racing games I'm hoping that my PC will play this maxed out at a descent frame rate.

Should get mine tomorrow too, This game has a pretty good multi player option, I wonder if it will cross platform, could a PC play against a PS3? Somehow I doubt it but that would be great, I could race against you Snowcrash.

There are now plenty of new Videos on YouTube, to help with the craving until it arrives. :P ;D

Looks cool.  Do you guys have wheels ?  I reckon it would be hard to play with my PS type joystick, driving games always are on that.

This game came through my letterbox a day late, I guess that's because I went for free delivery, but I have it now and just need to install.

Snowcrash has got the game for his PS3 and he has the full works, driver seat, pedals and steering wheel.

I am hoping the game works with my Saitek joypad which has two little analogue joysticks on it, thats how I've always played racing sims and am used to it.

It is however a Games for Windows live game and some of the games only support the Xbox360 controller, which is very annoying, but I will find out soon.

This is the best F1 game for the PC that there is, before it came out GP4 had the crown but F1 2010 easily beats it and I absolutely love it.

It runs perfectly smooth on my system @ 1920 x 1080 on ultra settings, some people are complaining about poor frame rate, I can only assume its people with low spec PC's or laptops that simply aren't up to modern games.

The dynamic weather system is something that I've never seen in any game, so realistic, it rains, the ground gets wet and puddles form, then the sun comes out and it starts to dry out, something that you have to see for yourself to fully appreciate.

My Saitek joypad works perfectly with the game too, happy about that.

To me the cars feel almost the same to drive as they do in GP4, I was really surprised by that I thought it would have a new feel or style of driving that would take some getting used to but no, I came 3rd in my first quick race and with in a short space of time I won a GP, the new tracks take a little learning but that's all part of the game.

The game was also 100% stable on my PC, we played it for about 10 hours and not one crash or glitch, impressive for a new game.

One slight negative to the game is load times, races do seem to take longer than they should to load, this might well get sorted out in a patch, I hope so but I can live with it as it is.

I would give it 9 out of 10 today, if they patch the load time it would get a 10 from me.

Like most new games it is full of minor bugs but Data has found a really annoying bug.

If you set research (you have to be top driver) and then quit to paddock without playing practice and qualifing, it corrupts the game save and you loose everything. Hmmm!

Be warned and backup game saves until a patch comes out.

I have done 3 GP now and all is well. Off to do no.4 now and I still say it's better with a steering wheel  :o :P

Yes grrrr, I love the game but we need a patch, got to half way through an F1 season and got the corrupted game save bug, all progress I had made has gone.

Even with the bug im still giving it 9 out of 10.

Since then I've been playing multiplayer online, that's quite a lot of fun.

I agree Snowcrash, steering wheel is probably the best way to play the game, Im doing ok with the joypad though, if only we could multiplay across platforms, then we would see  ;D

The first patch for this game is coming soon, here is information I shamelessly copied from CM's website about the patch.

Quote
Hi everyone,

It's been a while since we last updated on the forthcoming F1 2010 patch so here is where things are at currently...

The team are hard at work, and have been since launch, building the patch. We've focussed on both fixes to the game and a number of gameplay improvements based on your feedback. Once the process has finished, we can then release the patch for submission which will take an additional couple of weeks until it is available for release. Here is a quick overview of the main issues which we're addressing:

1. Corrupt Save Games - We have identified an over-zealous anti-cheating check that manifested as falsely identified corrupt saves, specifically the ones relating to practice and R&D upgrades, the save-games should now load without issue. However if any of you are experiencing corrupt saves outside of this then please continue to send your PS3 save game files to us (Xbox360 & PC saves aren't of any use to us) and we can test these against the latest patch to see whether all instances of this issue have now been fixed

2. AI not pitting in dry races where a mandatory pit stop was required (20% or more) – This has been fixed.

3. Player held in pit-stop too long – We've improved exit logic so that it isn't too cautious in holding players during a pit-stop.

4. Puncture frequency reduced – The likelihood of players suffering punctures has been reduced.

5. Pit-stop lock-ups - Fixed several instances which caused the pit crew to lock-up and not be able to service the cars.

6. Automatically updating race strategy – Selecting prime tyres from the tyre menu (over default option) now updates the strategy so that the pit-crew assign options during the pit stop as opposed to re-attaching another set of primes (in a dry race of 20% or more).

7. First lap calculates correctly – The lap time for the first lap of the race now calculates correctly, from the lights going out as opposed to the cars crossing the start line.

In addition to these fixes we've also made improvements to the game based on your forum feedback:-

1. OSD changes – showing split times rather than gap to leader – We've changed how the OSD timing information functions so that split times are now displayed on the OSD, showing race time and race time differences to the other cars – I.e. how far ahead/behind are at a sector boundary.

2. AI affected more by damage received – Damage sustained by an AI's car will have a greater effect their handling characteristics, effectively slowing damaged AI down more. AI cars that cannot maintain a racing speed will naturally yield to faster cars & come into the pits for repairs. As before, If they receive too much damage, they will retire from the race.

3. AI yielding to other cars when not on flying lap in qualifying - Improved AI behaviour to move off the racing line or out of the player's way when the player is on a flying lap.

4. Increased wheel support – Increased wheel support and force feedback tweaks (where applicable) for the following wheels; Thrustmaster Ferrari F430 Force Feedback (officially supported), Thrustmaster Ferrari GT Experience (officially supported), Thrustmaster RGT Force Feedback Pro Clutch (not officially supported but will work), Fanatec Porsche 911 Turbo S & GT3 RS2 (both officially supported).

5. Wet weather improvements - Rebalanced graphical and handling effect of cars driving on a wet track - the level of wetness has been increased as well as tyre trails being made more prominent.

6. Improved Damage Modelling – Tweaks to the damage system so that more damage is visible / received during lesser impacts.

7. Next lap invalidated time trial logic - In time trial the next lap is no longer invalidated for any offence committed in the 3rd sector. It is calculated per track and is predominantly based on the final corner.

8. AI: Driver Behaviours - Addressed some issues in driver behaviour balancing that were causing occasionally unrealistic finishing positions.

There have also been several PC specific improvements as well:-

1. PC 'replay saving' and playback – You will be able to save out the files to replay them later or share them with others.

2. DX11 – The F1 2010 patch will enable the game to run on DX11. All of the graphical improvements are configurable from graphical options when in DX11. Specifically, "ultra" settings for 'shadows' and 'postprocess'. (These options require a lot of processing power, and are only recommended for high-end graphics cards.

3. Eyefinity Support – F1 2010 now supports 3 x 1 or 3 x 2 monitor display setups (minimum requirement of 3 x monitors)

4. Optimisations – We have made better use of multi-core processors in general, which will lead to better framerates on higher end machines.

5. Additional Support - Support for SandyBridge processors, which also adds support for currently available 'modern' processors, like Core i7, which wasn't correctly detected previously.

This list is not exhaustive of the issues being addressed in the patch but a snap shot of the key improvements. Please keep your feedback coming though as it is invaluable both for the work on the patch and for the design of F1 2011.

Once the patch goes into submission, we'll try to give you guys a heads up as to when it will be live and ready to download as soon as we know.

Thanks for your continued support & feedback.

The F1 2010 Development Team.

I want the PC version with 3 monitors now.

How big a 4:3 monitor do you need to be the same height as a 40 inch 16:9? 2 of them on the sides would look cool.

I can't play F1 for the whole weekend. Got visitor over.  :'(

Some news on the patch for F1 2010:

The patch is made and is being verified by Sony and Microsoft.

Today the patch has been released on the PS3, I think it takes a while to get to every country but it's out there now.

We still need to wait a little longer for the PC and Xbox 360 patch, it seems Sony have beaten MS to it.

The patch is 35MB and went in ok (PS3 ver1.01)

Not sure what it has done but I still don't have the virtual lock on my wheel like I get in Grid, another Code Masters game.

Only difference I can see is the annoying 'invalidated next lap' in time trial much improoved.

Still a bit annoying but I get that you'd put in a wrong time if you cut the final corner.

I'm really glad they sorted the invalid next lap, that was becoming the most annoying part of the game, there are lots of other improvements too, see the list on the page before this one.

Piffling small change. Shall I BACS that amount now, should have enough in my current account.

I would offer GT credits or cars but you don't have a PS3.
