Cool. Even using acetylene, nutter. Interesting note, the plug sparks even on the exhaust stroke.

I've been following this guy for a few videos, and I'd been waiting for the final video of it running. Looks like they finally got it to run. Very cool!

@Snowy: Since small 4 stroke engines like that one only "fire" between compression and exhaust strokes (every other time the piston gets to the top), but have a simple cam and point ignition system, there is a spark with every revolution. Since the engine is between exhaust and intake strokes on this second revolution, that spark has no fuel to ignite, it can safely be ignored.

Pretty though, yes? :)

It must be possible to inject some fuel on the exhaust stroke then ignite it with the second spark, blowing some pretty flames out the exhaust, that should increase the efficiency of the engine by utilising the energy used for the second spark, I think.

Ok it's going to burn twice as much fuel but ... pretty  8)

Sadly, No, Data. The downward travel of the piston is when the intake valve is open, drawing air and fuel into the cylinder. If there were burning air/fuel in the cylinder at that time, the pressure of the explosion would be greater than the pressure of the incoming air, and would cause the incoming air and fuel to burn, travelling past the intake valve, and sending the heat and flame of that explosion into the carb, causing that to catch fire and burn. A two stroke engine, with it's reed valves for intake and exhaust that ensure that flow of gasses only travel one way, can ignite fresh air and fuel on each revolution. Sadly, the only way to lubricate and cool these reed valves is by mixing oil with the fuel so that oil can coat the surfaces of the valves, and that creates a LOT of emissions that are bad for the environment. This is why two stroke (or 2 cycle) engines are banned in the US for a lot of applications (personal watercraft, for example), and are slowly being phased out.

Yep, I've seen that burn Data's eyebrows off. Fiat 131 Sport!!

The simple engineering solution is to have the plug spark on each revolution, I just assumed it would be on one, not both. A picture paints a thousand words.

Mmmm, rockets. It is rocket science.
