  It seems like we have 5 EV charging stations in Worcester and it looks like more will be built.  The charge rate isn't mentioned.  Lowes is selling car chargers for EV for about 550 and that is for a 30 A charge.  If I was interested I'd still wait a few years, since I'm not interested I'll see how long my car lasts, it could last longer than me ho ho.

Here in Carson City, there are only 3 charging stations, all of which are free, but each have their own sets of restrictions. One is at a GM dealer, and only owners of GM EVs (a Chevy Volt, for example) can use the station (only 1 outlet) unless specifically cleared by the dealership's general manager, and even then only during normal business hours. The second is at the Nevada Public Utilities Commission, and it's also restricted to use during normal business hours. It also requires a special RFID tag to use (though I understand that this is actually normal at most charging stations). the third one is at the local power company. It also requires the same RFID tag, but is open 24/7. However, the power company gives priority to EVs in it's fleet, so may not be available when you need it.

That's actually 3 more stations than I had guessed were here in town. Nearby Reno has dozens of them scattered around town, most of which are free, though some are metered by charge time. I didn't take note of the actual usage cost, though. Just not that interested.

I hear that a new battery factory is being constructed in Sparks Nevada for the new Tesla Model 3.

Yup! I've applied for a position in IT for the new factory, but haven't heard back, so I'm assuming that they're not interested. Oh well. That new plant is less than 50 miles from me, BTW.

  I like the roadster myself.  50 miles each way sounds like a lot of driving, it would be nice if they'd give you an e car to drive back and forth.  Seems it would add an extra 2 hours to your day.

lol it would be fun to get use of a company vehicle, if said vehicle was even a Tesla Model 3. I think that if I were in that position, I'd take (read: MAKE) the extra time to travel to work "the long way". I'm sure that the new Tesla factory will have a number of EV charging stations in their parking lots.

I like that the entire plant will be (exclusively?) solar powered (though I'm also quite certain that there will be a "fail-over" grid connection in place for emergencies). If/when I ever win the lottery, I think my next car will possibly be an EV (probably a Citroen Survolt, though - Sexy, stupid-fast car) :D

  Great an elec muscle car, maybe they will find some improvements that can be made to the standard car.  It's interesting the whole plant is solar, I hope we are not replacing trees with solar panels.

The acreage where the plant is going is all sagebrush and cheat grass (a non-native, invasive species), so there's no problem with replacing trees, and from the looks of the proposed structure, the solar panels will just be on the roof, so no "wasted space" like we have with our local National Guard post (over 5 acres of panels covering otherwise empty land).

As for the Survolt, I own 2 racing games that feature that vehicle, and while it's not the same as driving the real thing, it's a still a fun car to drive.

  With all the techy advances it seems we are moving forward at a nice pace, SSD's, led lighting, solar panels and the small elec cars and track is replaced with a computer game.  I forgot the e cigs which I should try soon.  I hope you get the job there and get to drive one of there cars.

  I posted some info on the e cars manufactured by Chevy and Ford yesterday, not seeing it today so I may not have pressed enter.  My over all feeling is because of the limited range of the battery cars the hybrid may be a better way to go.  Ford seems to have a larger number of models for their e cars, again just elec and hybrid models.  Ford uses a 325 hp gas engine for their generator, it has a 6 speed auto transmission and uses an ac electric motor.  There is a large list of options for all the models.  I was unable to find any e cars made by Chrysler.

Probably wasn't you Carl2, the site has been experiencing some problems but things are looking better now, it might even be fixed  :fingers-crossed: 

My biggest concern with hybrids is how complicated they are, two engines means twice as much to go wrong. That is one reason why I like the idea of all electric cars, relatively simple in design.

  I'm bothered by the mileage for the plain battery powered car, I believe it's the Chevy spark that only accepts a 30 amp charge from both the 120 v and 240 volt.  The real answer is to get better mileage from the batteries or to be able to charge at a faster rate which we know can be done.
  Its much nicer when we can pick up the phone and say I'll be there in 15 min which makes the hybrid seem much nicer.  We accept the fact that we have a computer controlling the cars engine which I feel is pretty complex but it is finally trouble free and does a great job.

I'm kind of with Carl here, I'm afraid. You folks don't have to deal with vehicle range all that much, really, given that your country is only 85% as large as my state. (:P) And Nevada doesn't even crack the top 5 largest states in the US. In fact, over 20% of our states have more acreage on an individual basis than does the UK (provided we don't count your territories and provinces, that is. - yes, your country is tiny. :P) If we count only England, 62% of our states (31 in total) out rank you in size... Each.

that said, however, I have a couple of ideas that could extend the range of most EVs, and it's in 3 parts:

1.) cover all upwardly facing surfaces on the vehicle with flexible amorphous solar cells that connect to a charger, to help keep the battery going (I know, won't work at night, or in parking structures, or on really cloudy days).
2.) Attach a trailer that contains an "extension battery" that can either be used as a portable charging station, or as a direct connection to the battery, to extend the vehicle's range.
3.) cover said battery trailer with even more solar cells.

Ok, sure, these ideas will make the EV less sexy in appearance, but It's more important to "get there" than it is to look good when you die in the Mojave because your EV couldn't get across it in a single charge.
