An annular eclipse isn't quite the same, since the moon fails to cover all of the sun; so while it DOES get a bit dimmer, it's not quite the same. The last time I experienced a total eclipse, I was unnerved by the fact that it was rather dark where I was, but the mountains far to the north of me (the Cascade Range, in Northwest Oregon) were still bathed in light. It was very eerie.

I've done a bit of research on "full" eclipses (full eclipses are either total eclipses, or annular, as opposed to partials) that have been/will be visible from my area, and have composed a quick page to show the results of said research. Yes interesting, I must admit I didn't realize how few there were or how many years there are between them, better make the most of the coming one I see the next isn't until 2045.
