SO I was kept awake by what is currently my suspected hernia last night - seeing docs soon..

For some reason I was thinking about how in the US people say the word DATA.  Now recently I have heard Dave call this site da-ta-hop-a....  da and ta as the a in cat; and hop as in what goes in beer.

Whereas I say day-ta-hope-a

Yes I told you it was pretty random.

But then I thought, why on Star Trek generations do all the US crew call Mr Data - "Mr Day-ta" - like how us Limeys say it ?

Is this word data pronounced differently in some parts of the US ?

I have heard posh people in the UK say Dar-Tar too btw.

Oh well enough of my rambling.

I say the word data two different ways myself.
day-ta like Star trek's Mr. Data
and
da-ta for a data sheet,
it all depends on I guess how the sentence is constructed or what word or words I'm using it with.
for example: "I need to input data into a table" I use day-ta, but if I say "that is not enough data for me to have a clear image" I use da-ta.

when it comes to pronouncing this site I us the Day-ta way. For the hopa part I say hop-a, hop as like hip hop.

would be interesting to hear how Data himself pronounces the site 

I can answer that for you Syber, given that Data is as common as muck, it is pronnounced DAY-AHH OPP-AHH. No 'T' or 'H' are present.

I have heard people in the UK use both Day Ta and Dar Tar, I think, like Freddy that the posh people would say Dar Tar over here and the other 99% would say Day Ta, me I use Day Ta.

That reminds me, Dr. Pulaski from Star Trek had this problem




As for this site I originally wanted it to be pronounced "Day Ta Hopa" (I hope for data) but over the years more people seem to call it "Day Ta Hopper", which has kind of stuck but really I don't mind either.


Dave calling it Dar Tar Hopa was the first time I had heard it pronounced like that.

Thinking about this, all joking apart, sorry about that Data, this thread could cover almost the whole day given the geographical nature of our members. Could be good.

I think most of us Yanks have 2 different pronunciations for the word, the same as Syber (who, I know, is also a Yank). When I'm referring to information, especially computer information, I use the "short" sound (e..g. "da-tah" - the same sound as in apple - where you blokes get that 'r' in there, Ill never know. ), and yet I pronounce database as "day-tah-base"... Go figure.

The next time I make a video that mentions the site, I'll be sure to use the "correct" pronunciation, even though it sounds exceedingly strange to me.

Oh I wasn't implying there was wrong and right, it was just an observation.  Nothing wrong with the way you pronounce it Dave at all  Besides we have so many different accents in Britain that people often say words differently all over.

And thanks, I'm hoping for a pain free night, they say things come in threes, I'm just not looking forward to what that may be

I'd say "suckup" to Syber, but I feel the same way.

You say Toe-May-Toe and they say Toe-Mah-Toe
same with potato(e) and other similar but pronouncedly differrent words.

Them there's those words like wound, record, wind, etc. that have different pronunciations and meanings!
