Smoke me a Kipper I'll be back for breakfast - Ace Rimmer

DD1975

This made me laugh:

"Yet as his contemporaries, such as Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrodinger, devised a mathematical description of the quantum world in which certainties were replaced by probabilities, Einstein protested that the world could not really be so fuzzy. As he famously put it, "God does not play dice." (Bohr's response is less famous, but deserves to be better known: "Einstein, stop telling God what to do.")"

I know of these public conversations.
I would love to read the link but it's a bbc.com link and I can't view it. My eyes are making steam escaping noises trying to hold the rant in.

Hurah! I've read it now.

Here's a proxy link for anyone in the UK who would like to read it.

The double slit experiment is still being done and refined. The latest I've read about (can't find a link) uses the light particle to decide the path of a beam of light. It gets a mixture of wave and particle results depending on the state of the light.
The uncertainty princible does not state that we are uncertain, it states that the universe is uncertain until a measurement is made. If you ask a 'particle question' you'll gat a 'particle answer', if a 'wave question' then a 'wave answer'.
If you look at a fish tank corner on and the fish is in the right place, you'll see 2 fish. Does this mean they both exist?

Of course they both exist! :) In the final analysis, perception is reality, and it's entirely subjective to the individual, regardless of other (equally valid) perceptions. Remember the Guy Who Rules the Universe?* Same thing! :D

If you only feed one, will the other die?

I refuse to believe the universe ceases to exist when I close my eyes.

Me too.  It's just an illusion, there's only one fish.

DaveMorton

lol, sight isn't the only perception, Snowy. And you know I'm just having a bit of fun, right? :)

Whenever DNA is quoted there is always a pinch of salt around. esp with a total reality vortex.

My analogy breaks down due to the fish does exist at a fundamental level but we (and the universe) are not sure about photons and electrons.

Some say when the true nature of the universe is known it will disappear and be replaced by something even more inexplicable. Others say this has already happened.

And some say the world would have ended in 2012  ;)

But...say you are viewing the fish from the corner like you said...put your hand in there - now you have two hands as well !  And then catch the fish with your two hands and pull it out....tada !... one fish from two !

Yep...pinch of salt...

DaveMorton

Maybe it's "Snowy's Fish", rather than Shrodinger's Cat?

The weird bit is if you put one hand in and see two fish/hands, catch the fish and pull your hand out but can still see one fish and hand in the tank.

Maybe I have a new calling in life.  ;D
