Actually, Honda already has a similar vehicle ready, and so does BMW.  It is now proven we don't need gasoline powered vehicles anymore.  The back room deal with oil companies is to provide them 20 more years and then slowly introduce these cars.  Imagine filling your car up with salt water then using it to power your home with air conditioning and heat. Talk about upsetting the energy market...

I remember seeing this on Top Gear. Cool design and definitely the future in some way.
The best imediate effect would be no town pollution.

And here's the techie bit...
Electrolosis is only 80% efficient so if you filled up with water you'd need 20% more energy than you get out. i.e. it wont work.
The car has a hydrogen fuel tank so is filled with hydrogen and all its energy is available.
The problem is, there are no hydrogen lakes. If you use sunlight to make hydrogen then that energy is essentially 'free' and that would be fairly good. (there is a large manufacturing & maintenence cost both of which cost oil)
The easiest way to get hydrogen at the moment is via gas i.e. oil so that doesn't help our current oil dependency but the car is still a step in the right direction.

  I wonder about having liquid hydrogen as a fuel when I think about accidents.  I live in the city and see enough accidents, gas is bad as a fire hazzard but liquid hydrogen is cold and hydrogen burns.

   Its nice to see that investment has been placed into old technology. Hydrogen was used as a propulsion medium during WW2, rather crudly but it worked. It must have been quite something to drive along with a large bag of highly flammable gas above your head knowing one carelessly discarded cigarette could make ypur ears ring for a week or two.

   It beggars the question, what would we moving around in now if less investment had been placed into surpressing this development field?.


   One last thought, if Hydrogen is the future, when the oils all but gone, how do we drive off this island we live on, given that any gas propulsion is currently banned from the Euro 'pipe' .

The oil companies are just too big, powerful and greedy aren't they.

Yeah I wonder where technology and cars would be now is the oil had run out say 10 years ago, for sure we would still be driving cars but not running on petrol or even diesel  .

I wonder if we will see any serious alternative any time soon, my gut feeling says the oil companies will keep finding oil here and there for a good number of years still, so any serious alternative isn't going to happen any time soon.

Shame really.

Shouldn't we have an alterative now and keep the oil for other things, plastic lubricants things like that, instead of just burning it. 

It's ok to blame the oil companies but in the words of MTV, if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem. I need to drive to earn money to live. I buy goods that have done far too many miles (I have stopped buying Anchor butter 'cos it comes from New Zealand). We all line the fat cats pockets.

Hydrogen is NOT a fuel source. It is great as a fuel transport but there are no hydrogen lakes. Oil energy is about 40:1 (i.e. for every 1 watt of input you gat 40 out) this is the overall energy including everything. Oil shales are about 1.5:1, not good. Hydrogen from electrolosis (not inc. transportation etc) is 0.8:1 (i.e. it cost more than you put in) so overall it will be lower than that.

The main problem we have as a race is this. There are too many Humans. To live like Americans the world can sustain about 500 million. As Europeans about 1 Billion. As Indians about 8 Billion. We have 6.5 billion now and we use about 1.3 Earths worth of resources every year. This is not sustainable.
We burn more oil/coal per year than we have every done. The first half took 100 years to burn. The last half will be gone in 30 years. We need a WWII effort to club together and sort out our oil addiction. But we are Human and what we will do is fight and squabble over the diminishing resources.
