To keep the news up-to-date about AMD CPU's - the second gen Threadripper CPU's are just about here now, the flag ship being 32 cores and 64 threads, go go AMD

I feel we are talking super computers, something NASA might use in it's space program.  Nice to see AMD is doing well with there processors.

I've got to post this as I think it's quite big news:

QuoteAMD CPU sales top Intel once more

Are the tides turning once more ?

I quickly read the article, 51% for AMD vs 49% for Intel but Intels Core i9
9900K 8 core 16 thread may give Intel sales a boost. It can run about 5 Ghz. Price is about $580, for me this is a super computer we used to read about.

From that it seems like they are neck and neck and one goes ahead a little as they launch a new range. I think that's a healthy way for things to be.

It's 3 years 3 months since I got my 6 core Intel, I see no reason to replace it yet though.

Freddy

I wanted to see how things are in the CPU world. Found a little article giving an overview, thought it might interest others as AMD does well.

Comparing my now 4 year old rig with the Ryzen 2700X I can't see much benefit from a new build just yet:

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-5820K-vs-AMD-Ryzen-7-2700X/2579vs3958

But if I were building one today that would probably be the one I picked. They love it on Amazon:

Ryzen 3000 series are coming soon, I would hold fire until they arrive, leaked specs suggests quit a big step forward.

Freddy

Ohh, I'm not really thinking of a new build just yet. Good advice though :)

I just wanted to see if I am missing anything  ;D

The new Ryzen 3xxx is here, this video tells all, it's amazing value for money, quick and efficient.

I've added a poll to this thread, place your votes

Looks good  8)

I voted undecided as I can't see me needing one. If I were buying today I would get one though. I'll see how much longer this build lasts - I'm surprised the liquid cooler is still going strong - I bet now I said that the thing will go belly up.

Intel has just released it's newest version CPU,

This is quite big news, AMD bring 7nm to laptops putting some serious computing power in a mobile machine. These things will be quicker than most peoples desktops  :o

Freddy

Interesting, I was thinking of getting a lappy as a back up machine  8)

I thought you might be interested  :)

Just got to hold fire until the 4000 series of chips start getting put in the laptops, shouldn't be long now, the 6 core Ryzen 5's should be a nice bang for bucks option, in the vid he's only showing the 8 core.

It's a bit confusing but the mobile 3000 chips are only the equivalent of the desktops 2000 chips, to get 7nm in a laptop you need the 4000 mobile Ryzen.

Freddy

Cool, thanks for the info
