Snowcrash

Found this time lapse video taken from the Very Large Telescope observatory in Chile. It goes upto 720hd too.
Enjoy  :sign-peace:

I did enjoy that, the video and music  8)

Is that a lasar coming out of one of the telescopes? well I guess it is, but what is it doing Snowcrash?

Snowcrash

It's for the adaptive optics (corrective optics?).

They use a bright star to measure the fluctuations in the atmosphere and adjust the mirrors with pnumatics to compensate (I think corrective is the software equivelent. I could have the the wrong way round  :scratch-head:).
If there is no bright star they shine a laser in shot to act as the bright star.

This is done to get much clearer pictures but is hugely expensive. For us mere mortals we have corrective (from £1500) and picture stacking (free/cheap software)

Found another time lapse video at BadAstronomy.

This one was taken in Dakota USA (I assume). I do like the pan shots.

Re named the thread, seeing as more videos weren't from Chile.

And I found another one from

Stumpy Point, North Carolina, USA.

And another old English time lapse video...

Actually it was taken at Southern Ocean Coast in Australia. ¡Enjoy!

That was pretty cool, Snowy! :)

It's rather odd, seeing the Great Hunter upside down in the sky, in one part of the video, and in another, I recognized the SMC and the LMC, but I'm not familiar enough with southern stars to recognize any of the other brighter stars. All in all, a great find. :)

The main thing I noticed in the southern hemisphere was the Moon's shadow going the other way.
When you think about it, it makes sense but just feels weird.

Another time lapse video, this one of the recent Lunar Eclipse. Notice how the stars disappear when the Moon is at full brightness due to the camera f stop.

Just noticed, snowy, that this video is today's APOD, too. Very nice!
